hi guys,
i read as much of the thread as i could in hopes of answering my question, and i swear i'm smart at some things, but this is apparently not one of them. i'd love some advice for what i realize should be an easy question:
i have a tube amp head with a switch that allows 8 ohm or 4 ohm,
and an 8 ohm cabinet.
i'm thinking about adding an additional 8 ohm cabinet.
the appropriate way to do this is by setting the amp to 4 ohms and running it in parallel?

I've read through alot of this thread and I just want to make sure that I get it. If I understand correctly, an amp will power a cabinet(properly) as long as the impedence doesn't fall below the minimum load. for example: if I were to have an amp head that had a min. load of 2 ohms and and a cab that is rated for 8 ohms, it would be smooth sailing for my rig. Am I correct in my thinking. Thanks for the help everyone.

Read through this thread and it has been genius but I got confused after the 15th page of reading and so I thought I'd asking you mystical wizards of bass-ness straight on so I didn't get it wrong...

I am wanting to know what the correct balance is between the power rating of an amp and the power rating of a cabinet.

For example I am looking to buy the Hartke Kilo head which runs at Power: 2 x 500 watts @ 8 ohms, 4 ohms or 2 ohms
1000 watts bridged mono @ 8 ohms, 4 ohms or 2 ohms (lots of bang for my buck, long story...) and ideally want to purchase two 410 cabinets. I would aim to use both cabinets together for larger gigs and one cabinet for smaller gigs....

Please could you advise what impedence/power rating I would need to look for on a 410 cabinet so that I could use them both and singularly without fear of destroying my gear, but also so that I can push them if needs be.

Most amps bridged do not not do 2 ohms so you may want to double check that? Usually SS amps increase power output the lower the oms number goes. If it will accept 2 ohms bridged get two 4 ohm cabs (I suspect the output increases as the load drops). If it will not do a two ohm load bridged, get two 8 ohm cabs. 2-4 ohm cabs are 2 ohms to the amp head, 2-8 ohm cabs are 4 ohms to the amp head.
 
Tube Amplifiers ..... The important difference between tube amps and solid state ones is that it’s dangerous to run tube amps above their impedance rating!! Running a tube amp set at 2 ohms into an 8 ohm load can dangerously raise the plate voltage of the amplifier and ruin it. ....

I don't think it's true. No load is dangerous, destructive, but just higher load is safer than lower load like in SS amps

I've been thinking about running my 4 ohm Avatar 2x12 with my 8 ohm Avatar 2x10.

Anywhere from 400-1200 watt cabs, the thermal rating of cabs doesn't mean all that much.

I believe it's agedhorse that contributes here (Genz Benz engineer) I would say yes to the 2 ohm setting for a 2.667 ohm load.
 
Under reasonable conditions (ie. it's not 110 degrees) and reasonable playing styles (ie. not slamming the amp into output limiting all the time), the amp will work fine in the 4-8 ohm position and deliver roughly 750 watts RMS into that load.

If you are playing thrash or death metal in the desert at high noon, you may want to switch to the 2 ohm position or reconsider the conditions at the gig... ;)
 
Good stuff - learning a lot. Here's my question:

I run two 8ohm cabinets in parallel on an amp that runs 160 into 8ohm or 200 into 4 ohm. Does the wattage equally divide between the two cabinets (100watts to each cabinet) ? (this is my current set up)

One of the cabinets only takes 200 watts (a SWR 2x10 workingpro).

What if I get a more powerful amp that could put out 400 watts to the two cabs. Then I'd still be safe, because it would deliver 1/2 of the 400 to each cab (same ohm's) and thus the SWR would still get no more than it's max, yes?

And how much could I push the SWR 200 watt capacity cabinet?
Can I use a 500 watt amp running to the two cabinets for 250 into the SWR (I imagine it's possible, but risky, I could do it, but it might break, etc.)

Thoughts and advice is welcome.
 
How much wattage can a cab with 700 impedance and 8 ohms handle?

700 watts! it doesnt have an impedence of 700 that's the wattage rating. Ohms is a measurement of impedance

Exactly! The cab will handle 700watts at more than likely 1000Hz, your open E string is about 42 Hz so how much power it will handle on an open E string depends on speaker and cabinet design.

okay I can't be bothered reading everyones post to see if it's been asked, so heres my question.

How do I change my SWR Goliath 4x10 4ohm into a 8ohm amp, I know it's been done ive heard about it somewhere.
I'd rather do this then give up the amp to buy a 8ohm.

Ahhh a 410 speaker cab is not an amp. The amp (head) is the part you plug your bass in to, then to the speaker cab. The only way to make a 4ohm cab a 8ohm cab is to change the speakers. Are you sure your amp head can't use a 4 ohm cab?
