yeah, just getting back into playing bass recently and YouTube content on it... so yep, he's new to me.. he references Davie so I checked him out too...

Yes there's quite a bit. My problem is that they're not in bands. They're not performing with other musicians. They're not putting out albums. They're not writing/composing. It's more like bass masturbation.

I'd love to see this guy and Davie504 in a real band.

well some of the best musicians aren't the best at their instrument ... I would argue Paul McCartney is a mediocre bassists but an amazing musicians ... same for Pete Townsend on guitar... etc..

These guys are all raw talent, but no creativity (well, not no, but it's the wrong kind).

Berthoud has played in bands, released multiple albums, and done a lot of work with other musicians, much of which is posted on his channel. You could hardly have picked a worse YouTuber to make this complaint about, because you're completely wrong.

If we're talking about killer bassists with YouTube channels, my favorite is Nathan Navarro. Not only are all his YouTube videos informative, entertaining, and well thought out, but he is a working pro who got his chops touring with folks like Devin Townsend.

Another contemporary bassist I really like is Evan Marien. Angeline Saris kicks tail too. Yeah, a lot of younger/newer cats out there are doing killer stuff.

And I say cheers to YouTube and TikTok bassists. They're making bass cool. If cats like Davie, Berthoud, etc. inspire younger generations to pick up bass and create musical content with it, all the better. I'll never poo poo anything that inspires/encourages a kid to pick up an instrument.

Just did a quick Google. All his 'albums' appear to be self produced recordings. Nothing on a 'real' label.

No inclusion of other musicians on his 'albums'.

it's too easy just to acknowledge someone's talents/skills, so why not do it? why do those talented players need to do what someone else thinks they ought to be doing (someone who doesn't come close to having those chops). if the critics could do all that = they'd have their own band, music/albums, reputation, youtube channel, whatever...and then newbies and wannabes on TB could critique their work! when someone is that good = celebrate!

Oh, he's absolutely gifted...no doubt about it. Just seems such a waste to be 'only' on YouTube.

It's a notion that may bear with your cultural habits but not with our reality where people don't ever listen to music but from online sources. The first thing somebody does when they hear about an artist is check him on Youtube. Most will never buy an album, actually most people under 30 don't own a single record.

You're moving the goalposts from "not writing/composing" to not "on a 'real' label."

Yes, Berthoud plays the YouTube game (which is paying his bills, given his views), but he's also putting out some really great original stuff, both solo bass and with others. And he's getting more attention and money than if he was playing in another bar band.

I'm old school and enjoy real social events rather than 'anti'-social media
Just saw Brubeck Brothers Quartet, Jon Anderson, Kenny Barron Trio, plus local bands now that entertainment is coming back. Going too see B.O.C. and George Thorogood next week.
I'd love to see Davie504 and Charles Berthoud in concert.
I own over 2,500 vinyl albums, 1,200 CDs, 3 terabytes of digital music and still buy vinyl and CDs.
Its not my fault if young adults are still living at home with their parents and don't have a career to actually go out and really socialize. 'Anti'-social media is killing being actually social.

Just my opinion, but to me it seems such a waste of talent.

Again, just my opinion. I've been to over 200 concerts since I was 14, the first one being Grand Funk at the Spectrum. I'd gladly see Charles or Davie in a small club, Music Theater, Arena, Stadium, you name it and I'd gladly pay for tickets.
