Okay, so who else is having serious problems with their Ashdown ABM?

Mesa Walkabout, thinking it would be something different and at the very least be really light & whatnot.
Funny result, though, as I must have heavy hands or something: from my original Ampeg SVT 3 to the Aguilar AG500 I had next to the Ashdown to the Mesa, my good ol' P bass sounds exactly the same, as does my J.
For what it's worth, the Mesa's also just as loud as the A-down, if not louder.

I ordered an Ashdown MAG 210 combo tonight over the net, because there are no dealers locally. And then I was searching for Ashdown info and came across this thread.
Just my luck.

as I was considering an Ash (among other amps) I just came across this thread, I had these thoughts. Ofcourse it is totally just my opinion amongst many and I am not trying to preach any thing to anybody. Just trying to share and exchange like anyone esle. This should be read as sceptically and criticised as much as any another geezer writing stuff whilst bored on a break.
First - I dont think Made in Britain should be generally percieved to be any kind of godike quality mark in the first place. I'm from there and IME when I moved further into Europe (like Germany and so on) I felt higher quality standards were more commonly in place (though that seems to be slipping a bit too these days). So I personally ignore the 'British thing' as a quality mark.
Second - THe speed of rise of Ashdown is something that makes me stop to consider how this might affect their build quality. IMO To infiltrate the market so widely on a global level you have to produce fast, in other words Quantity takes priority over quality. You create gold, see it sell well and then are urged by demand to capitalise on the situation (or the marketeers around you). I perceive this as highly common in the Music Inst world these days. And there are plenty of other brands caught up in this market situation, I imagine this is also a matter of survival as much as for profit.
.... due to this situation (or my personal perception of it) I am avoiding equipment from many well known Bass equipment manufacturers, who I perceive to be operating in this way. Meaning that I personally am a bit sceptical about a lot of these common trade marks that you see in every bass shop all over the globe.
.... Finally I think the market today is a totally different place to what is was 10 - 20 years ago. As are the products from these widely known manufacturers IMO. This IMO, is common in all other areas of products, you have to be just as sceptical buying a lap top from a major company (particularly if it looks pretty) as much as any other prodcut out there.
So I dont think this problem is unique to Ashdown, it is the situation in the whole industry, I have no idea what the solution is, maybe buy older stuff and get some retired roadie who knows the parts inside out to make it run nice and smooth for a good price?

just one point. About fast producing companies. Ive not heard of any problems with MarkBass amps and they have been around less time than Ashdown i think.
I do agree about the made in Britain points though. In fact i think for most of their gear its "assembled in Britain" rather than made in these days. I think its just the new range that are made over here.

I have an evo500 (and am based mostly in Ireland so 230v)
I always have loved this head, its perfect for me,
doing a show bout 2 months ago luckily it was soundcheck, the light blinked, smoke came out the back and then it died,
oh i was so angry. brought it back to my local store asked them to send it back and replace it with a new one,, was waiting, waiting, waiting.
Was recording an album during this time so really wanted it for my tones, finally got the call, got our driver to pick it up for me as was in the studio, got it back and has worked fine ever since, but heres the thing, the store who sold me this went to a local repair fellow, even though i specifically said i wanted a replacement head, I'm assuming that this is now going to Void my guarantee with ashdown and im worried about future problems,

I was just about to buy a Truimph motorcycle, which is made in England. I'm going to buy something else now - I'm afraid there will be food inside the engine & I'll crash.
All ashdown products I've seen in my neck of the woods either say "designed in great britain, assembled in china." or "assembled in great britain" I'm assuming ( don't you love that word?) then, that all the parts for the ashdowns are made in china. If that is true, why does the cab assembled in china cost 300 and the cab assembled in great britain cost 800? What's the difference in the cabs anyway? I've compared them side by side and can't tell the difference.

Got a brand new ABM 500 RC EVO II, used it for the first time in rehearsal yesterday. Was fine for 15 mins then there was a strong burning smell and then the amp packed up and now it won't switch on!!
it did sound good in those 15mins tho!!! hahaha
i wasn't even driving it that hard!

Man, I can't believe this post is still going....
For the record,my ABM EVO 500 2x10 combo has never given me a problem. I bought it used a while back,was worried about reliablility because of this thread,but I've played many(loud) gigs and rehearsals and no problems.
I'm pretty sure it is pre-China,though.
Hopefully it will keep performing well because I love the way it sounds!

I been told on another board that it was the main transformer that went...
Just getting a straight replacement from the shop.

I also could notice my ABM500 would clip VERY fast. Plus, I had a constant hiss. Went to my dealer's, who sent it for repair. I had to wait four weeks. Back here, the amp was OK, there was no more hiss, but still clipping very fast. Finally traded it in and got a Markbass.
