I asked Michael Pedulla to pick an irregular pattern for my custom MVP5. It turned out really well, it has odd little specks of brown in the charcoal.

I’ve got some basses right now with beautiful flamed tops/bodies, but since the OP is looking for necks and fretboards…in my experience, EBMM has some of the best. Here’s one I previously owned…

Just finished building this in May of 2022 - quilted tiger maple with wenge accents...

And I know you said no tops, but this thing was the most amazing slab of tiger maple I've ever seen, so I bought the entire slab and was able to make matching fretted and fretless twins...

I LOVE all of these examples posted here.. do I love figured maple? Well, it's my preferred choice to build basses. I love the stuff.
