Okoume jazz bass

Hello to all on talk bass, I have a problem with my okoume jazz and am hoping that someone may have encountered this or may have some advice, so here goes. The bass has very low output, terrible humming that goes away when I touch the strings also if I touch a pick up pole piece without touching anything else the noise gets even louder. I have replaced the battery and I have remove the control panel and visually checked the wiring also have check the ground wire under the bridge could the pre amp be faulty ? Thanks in advance

Does the noise that stop when you touch the strings stop when you touch any other metal, like the bridge or knobs? If so, your bass requires a proper shielding job to stop the noise. I assume this is the case because this is a pretty standard issue with Fenders.

The noise you get when you touch the pole pieces indicates the pieces are not grounded. You have two options here, you can ground the pieces or you can coat them with clear nail polish to prevent your fingers from making contact.

I think you could well be correct about the shielding I have had jazz basses in the past and have done this myself, the thing that I find really strange is the low output, thanks for your help. I think I maybe have posted in the wrong forum, would it be possible for a mod to move it to the pick up and electronic forum, thanks again

As far as low output goes, you can try raising the pickups but you can go too close, causing a magnetic pull on the strings. Since the bass is active you could see if the pre-amp has a trim pot to set volume. I have only played one okoume jazz in store so I cannot really tell you what to expect for volume, sorry. The low output could just be part of the pickup design.

As far as moving the thread goes, just PM a mod and they'll move it for you.
