Old Bass, New Strings

I have owned a Kay M-1-B, SN 37460 1/2 for over 15 years, but never learned to play it. It was handy to have in the corner for other bass players to use. The nylon strings have never been replaced in my ownership. This isolation motivated me to get it out of the corner and give it some new life. Need some advice on strings for amateur beginners playing bluegrass. Over the years, other players have enjoyed the soft nylon strings.
