I've been looking for some cheap second hand 8 and 16 track recorders and I found a few Tascams that seemed efficient enough for basic house stuff. I was wondering about the quality of these and if they could make a clear sound out of guitar, bass and drums? They're not very big, I'm sorry I couldn't remember the models.

FWIW, I still use my Tascam 424 4-track a good deal, even though I've got protools. Good sounding machine.

I've heard people do some amazing stuff on these machines...and I've heard a whole lot more total crap. Keep the heads clean, watch your levels and learn how to mix, and you can make some great tracks.
Heck, I still have my old Tascam Porta II (four-track cassette). The drive bands rotted, but I found replacements and I still use it! I always considered Tascam quality stuff.
I've been using a TASCAM Syncaset 238 for about 4 years now. 8 tracks on standard cassette.
