On dongles and stuff...

Umm, I have a question related to dongles. A friend of mine recently bought Cubase 4. I'm not sure if it can be installed on more than one computer (if anyone knows do tell me please), but in any case I realised I would need the dongle for it to work anyway, and only one is included in the package.

I found out that Steinberg sells the dongle separately, so I was wondering if I can just get this dongle separately and install my friend's Cubase 4 and whether this will work.

The dongle is the copy protection so I am guessing you would have to buy a full copy to get another.

What your trying to do is what dongles prevent against. You have to have some sort of code on the dongle for it to work, which you wont have if you buy just another dongle.

You can probably install the software on many computers. However it'll only operate on the computer with the dongle attached. That's their purpose in life.

If you don't want to spend hundreds on recording software (which I totally understand), then you should search out the cheaper / free options available. You may want to check out Audacity which is free. I don't know the names of other less expensive programs so hopefully someone else can help you out here.

Reaper is sweet. Much better than audacity IMO. You can download the program which is uncrippled for free. Your supposed to donate then $50 after you decide you want to use the program. Technically you dont have to, but at $50 its the best deal around for a DAW.

Well hey, no harm in trying some of the free/cheap ones like Audacity/Reaper.
