I learned on a 4 (which wasn't mine), I did my first gig a few months later on a 5 string unlined fretless (eek!), then a few months later bought my first bass, a 4 string.

4, and that is where i still enjoy playing. I own a 5 but I play on a four the majority of the time.

4, that's all any bass guitar had when I started. First bass a short scale Airline made by National, later switched to a Fender Precision and have been there pretty much ever since.

My first bass was a 4str-HONDO firewood when I was 8 years old! But I only played 1 string! For now I won't play anything else with less then 5 strings!

Again, I started on four only because five wasn't easily available. If I had it to do over again, I'd start on five and not four. And the best thing to do is to start learning on the bass you plan to play, whether it's 4, 5, 6, or more.
