One fret replaced???

Anyone know how much a shop will charge to replace one fret? Long story short, I own an 80's MIJ fender p bass that slid off the end of a counter top & smacked the edge of a table right on the 5th fret. The string put a huge dent in the fret, & now when I hit that note it buzzes (through the amp).

Shouldn't be much at all. Most decent luthiers will have piles of fretwire sitting around. I wouldn't pay much more than 15 bucks, but I am like that. I took a 24 fret bass to have about 5 frets levelled and all of them dressed on both sides and the final cost was under 75 bucks.

I no longer do repairs for people but when I did, I would have charged you $50 assuming there was no underlying damage to the fretboard. When you change that fret out there will be considerable profiling and fine detail work to make it match the others. Some might do it for more or less...I think a lot depends on the shop and the market.

Hi.

I'd say that it's a one hour job with everything involved, so whatever the 1 hour bench fee is, would be reasonable with me. Not that I'd outsource anything like that .

Just like Jazzman said, there's quite a lot of work involved in replacing only one fret.

50 bucks is on the high side for one fret imo.

Have you ever done just one? Not even trying to be a smart@$$. The changing of the fret is the easy part. Profiling and leveling and what not to match the rest is gonna take some time. $50.00 would be more than fair.

ive watched some serious pros do the fretwork on my basses including partial refrets, levels, re-crowning etc and 50 bucks is high imo.

My local shop charges a minimum of $15 and $65/hr. Fretwork is $10 per fret. Do do it properly is a 20-30min job.

So from all of that I'd say your charge is definitely ballpark.
