ok, smartassery aside, i think it's a matter of diminishing returns: two pickups results in a big increase in sound options over one pickup, and those options are usually all legitimately "good" sounds if the pickups are put in the right places.

three pickups can result in many more options, but a large percentage of those options are likely to not be so useful.

four pickups is just stupid.
