On a 4, I'm perfectly comfortable with standard (3/4", 19mm) spacing.
When I first got a 5'er, it was an EBMM SR5, which I believe has 17.5mm spacing.
I didn't notice string spacing, but did notice neck width.
Because it was a somewhat narrower spacing, it made the transition easier for me.
I bought a few other 5'ers with narrow (16.5mm) spacing, and was comfortable on those.
A few years back, I got a Roscoe 5 with 18mm spacing, and the neck ended up being too wide for me. As beautiful as it was, it just wasn't going to work out.
I rarely ever pick up a 5 anymore, but if I do, it'll be one with narrow spacing.
I think the fact that I started on guitar before switching to bass, makes it easier to deal with the tighter spacing, rather than the extra neck width of wider spacing.
