Opinions on Michael Manring

Right. Back to Michael Manring.

Big +1 to what AndroWal said.

I really started to appreciate how good he is hearing him backing songwriter John Gorka. Before that I was a bit turned off by how over-the-top technical he can be - amazing but it didn't move me. But hearing him really play to the song - very strongly as both a bassist and as an expressive element within the song - opened me up to his musicality, and helped me appreciate his technical side more.

Another +1 here. While I respect technical prowess and 'chops' I often find such players making music that leaves me utterly cold. I was introduced to Manring through his Windham Hill work listening to Hearts of Space back in the late eighties on public radio late at night so I thought of him as a stupendously gifted fretless player. As he got more technical I just drifted away from his work. Thonk was the last record of his that I purchased and I quickly traded it back in. That said, he's on his own musical journey so more power to him.

Again, I apologize but I feel like this has been a very productive conversation and exercise and I enjoyed it. I just love talking about music.

great. most of us here love talking about music too, that's why we're here.

but the mandate here at talkbass is to keep the tone positive, or at least keep it from being ascerbic. we've found that doing so keeps the quality of the discussion higher.

then again, most of us don't feel the need to descend into ad hominem attacks when someone questions our opinions, or foot stomping tantrums insulting everyone because they don't agree with us.

since interracting with a little bit of decorum with regard to other folks' opinions seems to be more trouble than it's worth for you, might i suggest tabcrawler.com for your bass discussion needs? you also seem to be doing well for yourself at youtube, obviously, so there's that too.
