Opinions on Small Portable Combo

Here's a vote for the Phil Jones Briefcase. It's a 100 watt 2X5, weighs in at 28 pounds and is extreme hi-fi - very clean. I've been using one for several months now and love the convenience. I play services with it in a 500 seat sanctuary. The amp itself gives enough volumn to hear yourself and be heard on stage (or in a pit?) and it has a direct out to go through a board into house mix.

It's a little pricey, but I love mine. :hyper:

I'd recommend the Roland Cube 100, which can be carried easily in one hand and has surprising volume, depth, and clarity considering the size and power rating. Using MIA P-basses, I compared it head-to-head against the new Fender Bassman 150 and Eden N12S combos, and IMO it wasn't even close. The Roland was the easy choice, with much more depth and power. The 12" speaker has a coaxial tweeter, so it has more clarity than many comparable combos. I've also tried the G-K MB150, and despite the Roland's much lower price, I think it's comparable tone-wise and probably much louder. (I'm not sure because I've only played the G-K in a larger room.)

Plus, the Roland has several amp models, some of which could be useful, and a DI. The effects are generally a bust, but even without those I think it's a fantastic amp.

To find a Phil Jones amp do a google search on Phil Jones Bass Amplifier. They sell direct and have a few links to retailers as well.

If I recall the list for the tolex model is $599. They also make a model in a blue flame maple cab. That adds another $300 (I think). I asked if they could match the finish of my King upright (true blonde). They said they would 'consider' doing custom one-offs, but are not doing that right now.

They sell new for list price. I've never seen a used one for sale.

Looked it up.....

I also have an AI Contra I that works wonderfully.
This is what I have too and it's not too hard to find one of the older ones for a decent price.

Very punchy and clear although if you want to practice with a very loud drummer you may need to plug into an extra speaker.

These amps by the way have the rep for being jazz or acoustic amps, but what they actually are good for is anyone who likes a warm punch, which is why I love them. :)

I don't know that I've heard someone describe them as warm before. I bought one recently (it's on its way) and have only played DB through them. I'm a little concerned about the BG sound and have been investigating something to warm the sound up. I guess only time will tell...
