Opportunity knocks. But there's a catch.

Not to bore you with unrelated anecdotes, but I remember back in high school we had a garage band. Like most kids we didn't have lots of money for gear, so for our gigs (usually outdoor parties) we had old refrigerator boxes cut down to size and painted black with grey circles on the front. From a few dozen feet away they looked like cabs. Drove the girls nuts thinking we were rock stars. Volume was never an issue. Talent was.
This is actually a good idea and could be part of the show. A wall of realistic looking cabs made of cardboard that comes crashing down at some point during the show (perhaps due to a "clumsy roadie") right on top of a band member, who then emerges unscathed from beneath the pile.

What do you have to loose? As long as you are not being told you have to hump all that gear at every show. That will that a while to set up and sound check. My band has about 1/3 of that gear and we take about 2 hours to get everything unloaded and set up properly. I can't imagine what I would be like wrapping all that cabling after a show. 4 hour breakdown AT LEAST!

Whether this is something serious or just some guy down the streets wet dream... DO IT!
In the end it's all music and unless it's abysmal, it's suppose to be fun, so make it that way.

If not at least jam with them once and finish off the session by lofting yourself into the pool.
Take your bass off first.

I agree sir. This was very common for the 80's. Back then not having big gear was a detriment. This is an opportunity I wouldn't pass up. To the OP: Try this out for a while. If your other band is a bunch of cool guys, they'll understand. Try to make both work. But you won't come across this opportunity that often.
I notice the OP hasn't posted any more pics or any updates. Maybe he's already started with the band?

We had a meet and greet today but it wasn't at the rehearsal site. Unfortunately further pics won't be till next weekend.
I know!!
No pics
No proof

No. The parrot isn't real.

Wow, I kind of forgot how judgmental TB can be. Some guy has an idea and is willing to put up his own money to try it out and gets 6 pages of insults. :rollno:
I don't feel anyone insulted the OP. You have to admit when looking at that setup it's not the norm or anywhere near close to what most bands use today.
For the most part many supported him. Others like myself questioned the setup more than the deal. Yes TB is judgemental but in this case the setup raises allot of questions, not insults.

Not for that style of music, it doesn't raise questions. Anyway, they're dreaming if they think they'll fit all that into small bars anyway, so it's pretty much a moot point unless the venue is sizable.

Not the OP, the person starting the band. And there were plenty of insults directed at him.

The OP has a band already that he likes, and which, if I interpreted him correctly, is starting to gig. Getting to play through the massive wall of gear is cool, sure. But if he can't do both bands, he's going to have to decide which to stick with. I just think he ought to go into this with eyes open as to the possibilities.

This COULD be a great idea that the BL is willing to put the necessary backing behind, that will take off and be hugely satisfying.

On the other hand, there are more important fundamentals to running a band successfully than having a wall of gear. If those aren't in place, then wall'o'gear COULD be a symptom of delusions of grandeur by a clueless BL daydreaming about getting in on a kind of scene that no longer exists.

Also, it was slipped into a response to an earlier post of mine (quote function didn't separate his reply out), but the OP mentioned that the bassist they had previously wasn't able to make the time commitment this band requires, which leaves me asking, how much of a time commitment is that? That could just mean that the other guy had too hectic of a schedule for weekly rehearsals, but then again, some delusions-of-grandeur types (and we all know they exist) can have very unrealistic notions of how frequently their pet project has to rehearse.

As I said before, the fact that a drummer the OP respects has bought into this project is a hopeful sign. Drummers are in demand around here and if this guy is good, he can pretty much have his pick of bands.

If I were the OP I would ask straight up questions about schedule and booking. Where exactly do they plan to play, for what pay, how much of that rig is coming and how will it be transported, who is doing the booking, what marketing materials will they be putting together, etc. That will reveal a lot. If that whole rig is for playing gigs at Hilltop Pizza or Castaways, this is not a well-thought out idea. If they have a contact who can get them into Wally's, on the other hand, the wall'o'gear makes more sense (but then, Wally's has its own massive in-house PA. They could still load all the backline in, though).
