Original Bands? Why?

If you actually believe you and your band have written the best sogs there could possibly be, Tenacious D stylee, then that would be a rather grand assumption. If you don't believe that, and I don't think you do, then I plainly wasn't talking about you. Pretty sure the punctuation supports that hypothesis.

That's different than what you first said, "It takes a special kind of arrogance to genuinely believe that your songs are better than all the others."

I think some of our originals, as originals, are better than others'.

But then of course, I have, according to you, "a special kind of arrogance".



Yep, it can be hard to even write a good post, but I hope when we write most anything, we want it to be good, and that sometimes we succeed.

I'll add I have a jam session tomorrow with 2/3 of the rest of the band, and I wrote three sets of lyrics tonight.

I write all of the time (see the link below) and I figger there must be one song in there no one else has thought of or done as (subjectively) well as I did.

Probably more uncharitable of the drive to make the covers/original division a strictly policed dichotomy. But it would be fair to say it could have been phrased better. Guess I thought that by identifying as a songwriter I would be turning any such criticism back on myself. Live and learn, huh? Cept it seems i never do,

I've played originals with talented songwriters across a few different genres and not one of them ever claimed their work was better than what came before, or had a special kind of arrogance. One of them turned out to be a bit of a dick, but that had nothing to do with the songwriting.

As for policing a dichotomy, that's not for me. Folks should play whatever they want and whatever works for them.

If the writer has a decent songbook, then why not.
But conversely, if they haven't..hell, no.

I'm doing a few tracks with a guy from way back...and I thought he was really good back then.
Be interesting to see if he still can carry it off.
One of the tracks is a update of an old version.

If it works, then I wouldn't be against gigging them..

I was thinking about why you might feel singled out by a zesty, but ultimately throwaway, comment. It occurred to me that I might have stupidly used it in a post in which I quoted you. Oh poopie. But no. Came up in response to Marko 1's post 171. And you chose to put yourself in that frame. The only way to make that comment be about you is to have the implicit notion that everyone who writes songs, including myself, must think like that. I've already stated that I don't believe it about you. Not so sure about myself. Ha ha.

I didn't come to this site, this forum, or this thread to insult anyone. And I'm sorry you feel I insulted you. But when I made the comment I was thinking about related conversations I've had with other people. And even then it was hyperbolic. I admit that. But you chose to walk across the room and put yourself in the line of fire. I can't control that. Not sure I can or should feel guilty on that front.

I’m 66 and have been gigging since I was 13. I’ve heard a lot of local level originals bands over the years and played in a few. Most of the songs just aren’t very good. A fair amount of popular songs aren’t very good either.

But putting that aside, I don’t want to hear three sets of ANYONE’S music, even groups I love. The most successful originals bands I played in over the years played a 50/50 mix of originals and covers. AND we did the covers similar to the originals, not some half fast, “I’m mad that I have to play these songs” version.

Just my two cents.

Well there's no point ....

Just got back here. See, we recorded Saturday (5 originals, including one based onna Lewis Caroll poem), and I mixed all Sunday, exercising my special kind of arrogance.

It's all good, no reason to feel guilty, I'm not insulted, just shootin' the poopie.

Now I gotta find time for overdubs, and I'm thinking keys so that takes extra effort.
