What theory?I’m not a tinfoil hat wearer by any stretch. Still, it’s enough to make you start wondering about some of those conspiracy theories you hear about the suppression of Tesla and his works.

What theory?
Tesla claimed to have access to free electricity that he could pull directly from the atmosphere. People who profited from selling generated electricity had their livelihoods threatened.
Strangely, no evidence of Teslas research survived the fire.
It is Allessandro Volta. (As in volts. Get it?) I stood in front of the statue in his home town of Como, Italy this morning.

The whole problem with that argument is that it depends on accepting (without proof) that Tesla’s claim was true; and accepting (again without proof) that some party or parties unknown actually felt threatened enough (an assumption and an assertion) to resort to violence (an allegation) in response.
So…
Unsworn testimony, or testimony in the absence of concrete verifiable supporting evidence, is hearsay.
- Claims are not evidence.
- Assertions are not evidence.
- Innuendos are not evidence.
- Feelings are not evidence.
- Suspicions are not evidence.
- Assumptions are not evidence.
- “Common sense” is not evidence.
The whole problem with alleging there’s a conspiracy is that it “explains” so much without offering any real proof of anything.
Does that mean it didn’t happen? No. Because you can’t logically ever prove a negative nor should you need to. The burden of proof falls squarely on the shoulders of the party making the claim. A claim can, however, be disproven by identifying: insufficient or absence of evidence, faulty reasoning, and/or the presence of logical fallacies.
“And so castles made of sand, fall into the sea, eventually.” as the Jimi Hendrix song put it.
Here’s a thought…
If Tesla did develop a practical way to harvest electrical energy from the friction of the atmosphere against the earth as it rotates, why would that energy be considered “free.” Or that it would be provided free to its consumers. It would still require the building and maintenance of the harvesting plants. And transmission lines to end users. All that would require a massive amount of investment capital to roll it out on a large scale. There’s also energy lost through transmission. And since none of that is free, those costs would need to be recouped from the consumers.
Nor would it necessarily be cheaper for the consumers. Companies are under no legal obligation to pass their savings on to the customer. Tesla could have just undercut Edison and Westinghouse by a small percentage to be competitive and let it go at that.
Or in areas that hadn’t yet gotten electrified, Tesla’s company could have charged as much as its board of directors wanted subject to market demand.
Sad thing is Tesla didn’t pay much attention to the issue of energy storage. We already know how to generate significant amounts of power in any one of a dozen different ways. And a significant portion of it goes to waste in the process of transmitting it.
Truth is, our big problem is we still don’t have good way to store electrical power on a large scale. Sure, we’ve made major advances in battery and super capacitor technology. But it still isn’t enough for anything other than personal electronic devices, appliances, hand tools, and some cars. Had Tesla come up with a way to store electrical energy on a large scale (we’re talking megawatts) that discovery would have become far more than the scientific curiosities a lot of his inventions are. It would have been a gamechanger.
But if you manage to get it into a bass, you'll never need to worry about neck dive again!It's going to take a heck of a big control cavity to hold that battery.

My guess is you'd - ahem - "commit suicide".What if I had intellectual property which moved cars around without petrol electricity or hydrogen cells?

People have in fact come up with many similar ideas. The main problem is that they're all perpetual motion machines.Tesla also had a plan for wireless transmission of electrical power, so a wired power grid would not be necessary. Good in theory and we we use inductive coupling for short distance charging all the time. Not so great to power the world though.
If Tesla did have viable ideas for low cost power production and distribution, it's extremely unlikely that no one since has come up with the same ideas. Grand inventions that would change the world would become reality. Conspiracy theories around Tesla suffer the same as every other conspiracy theory - it is impossible to keep secrets between more than a handful of people for any length of time.
