apple or orange? it would depend on which one I would be more likely to eat first.
thats the point of this, to determine which pedal would get used more, and that would be the one I'd get first until I could afford the other one

So you're basing which kind of distortion you would use more based on a poll of the rest of us, with no indication of what kind of music you play, what sort of mix you're going to have to sit in... etc.?

Well gee, that just sounds like a swell way to get a lot of answers that don't help you at all. ;)

I'm having trouble telling the difference on a lot of recordings, so I figured I'd see which one was used more commonly, then if I got that, I'd be able to cover more. Then when I could afford it, I could get the other.

Ah, fair 'nuff.

When people are trying to cut through/have the intricacies of their playing still remain, they tend to go with OD.

For full on roaring fuzziness, well, you guessed it, people tend to use fuzz boxes.

for the difference:

That's a fuzz tone.

Man, Entwhsitle is STILL one of my heros...

So a dumb question - are there many pedals that can cover the range from OD to Fuzz?

And (for my own edification) what do you consider Bogdan's Polish Love? I've heard it described as an OD here, but the clips I've heard have seemed further over toward fuzz...

I own one. I would say it's a happy cross between OD and fuzz, but it's more a fuzz which stays defined and cuts through. On very low gain settings it's sounds like an overdrive but it has a synthy character to it. Some like it, some don't.

I would say it's a fuzz. After all, it's a copy of a fuzz pedal, right?

Well, Polish Love arrived today. My first dirt pedal... and I don't love it. :(

Very cool, heavy sound, but not one that fits with the music I mostly play...

Understood. I'm actually not sure I hear a fuzz or OD in my future. I had a pedal to trade, and wanted to try one out.

Most of what I play is blues, R&B, and roots rock and folk-ish ballads on a fretless bass.
The stuff on my Myspace page gives a decent idea of that.

I'm also doing live looping, and effecting that sound is what most of my pedals are for.
But even there, the sound of the fretless through a slightly overdriven tube preamp (in my Genz Benz) is the meat of the sound that I like.
I'm digging an Envelope filter on it. But not a lot of fuzz.
