Not intending to troll here, but what is the real goal with these 'overrated bassists' threads? According to the forum rules, you're not supposed to rack down on other bassists here and I don't see why famous/well-known bassists would be an exception. I definitely wouldn't enjoy being called "overrated" or hear I'm "like a monkey" like above, or something equally disrespectful. Is there anyone else that finds these threads slightly disturbing?

It ain't my cup of tea either, but it's worked out pretty well for him. And like it or not, he's found something unique; you know it's him when you hear him, and not a lot of people have that going for them.

I see you take lessons from Troy Johnson. Very cool...my old band opened a few shows for his old band (Ivory Star) and he filled in for me once in another band I was in. Great guy, great player.

Anyway, small world, sorry to get off the subject, yada yada.

Well, back to Flea which was brought up in the last thread as an over rated bassist. I highly second that. His style is alright but he seems like another slapper and nothing really... good. He's groove is alright but not top notch, his technique is... not much, and on top of that... that's an ugly mother.

"soul to squeeze" is one of my all time favorite basslines. flea is greatly talented.

Geddy Lee - fretboard gymnast but unlistenable drivel. Mccartney is the epitome of fab technique, but understands the preeminence of the song itself.

Flea to me is not overrated at all. Songs like Give it Away, and By The Way make me think he is awesome.
