Overture Basses

I was wondering what you all think about the Overture bass ( Tim Gaines Model)? I like the looks of the bass but,...the price tag is $2650.00. And I see where the body is made of Poplar?? I haven't had an instrument with that kind of wood, is it me or is that a "cheap" wood to make guitars/basses from? Not bashing the Bass or anything...Kind of like to have it! But MAN....that price. But,..I guess you get what you pay for or so they say..

Played this bass today at the Nashville Amp Expo along with the newest T.Gaines model. Honestly, with this level of lutherie I'm amazed they sell it for under 5K, these are really impressive. And actually, poplar is a great tone wood but seldom used any more. In these basses it's used as a 'sandwich' along with some other more decorative woods. Try to check one out if you get a chance!

I just came across this thread. I did all the wiring on Overture Guitars & Basses while they were in business. The reason for the price tag is a that they were all hand built and hand painted by a commissioned artist, so no two were ever exactly alike. They were an off-shoot of Overture's Royal Relic series which were all similarly hand painted works of art. All of Justin's guitars & basses were amazing, I hope he decides to come out of retirement some day and start making them again full time.
