P-bass for slap?

yay, it does date you,but in a good way i don't hink africa has any slapping on it, but 'rosanna' and '99' defenitley do. hungate was slapping his p (fretless?) on '99' and it sounds fantastic.

On The first Brothers Johnson album Luois used a P bass. Of course we all know he slapped the hell out of it! My first bass was a P and I slapped it all the time. However, the slap tone on a p bass isn't the tone I need these days. Some basses have a great slap tone and some don't... thats just the bass.

It is a different, but useable tone. I have a P copy (probably ash body, definitely maple board, duncan 1/4 lb pickup) that I have slapped on for years. It has less high end to it, but it is a useable tone, and a nice change of pace. I even slap a little with flats and it sounds pretty decent, but it isn't as articulate as a J or something would be.

P's sound really good when slapped, at least with rounds. That being said, I avoid slapping on mine since I only use flatwounds for my Precision.

To my ears, the sound of a P being slapped is the funkiest thing around. Especially if it's an early 50's style P

Best slap solo on a P I have seen was on Yanni's Live at the Acropolis. Not sure who the bass player was but that was a great slap solo. You can slap on just about any bass if it is setup properly.

I haven't had a P for a while and just got hold of one, a stock sx.

I noticed that there was a lot of harmonic content in the tone, more than my PJ with the switch thrown to neck. I wasn't sure if it was because of a weak fundamental out of the cheap pick up or something about the placement or just some P bass mojo showing thru.

I would think this makes for a punchy slap tone, and I found that I liked the slap tone I was getting, even with the stock sx strings and no setup.

Actually, "Dead or Alive" were probably the least offensive thing (to my ears anyway) that S.A.W. ever gave us!

"Artists" such as Rick Astley, Hazel Dean, Sinitta, Mel and Kim etc. proved that you don't need a bass player on your records to have a Number 1 hit single in the UK . They also proved, in the process, what a dreadful mistake that was musically !

I think I should be safe from S.A.W. fans on this forum .

Yes, one advantage of living in the US over Europe is, lower levels of toxic synth-pop. Although we still got quite a lot of it in the '80s.
