P bass neck - Neon Yellow and darker maple

Age? Lighting? Different pieces of wood? Different finishes depending upon the age of the bass (poly vs. nitro).
I've seen basses painted neon colors(see *80s*)but never a natural maple neck that really approached what I'd call neon. Can you post a pic or link to one?

Maybe it's the finish, I can't tell. I've got an old P bass at home that has a darker colored neck like the American Standard, but the other day I was at a local guitar store and they had a bass like the Steve Harris model and the wood was way bright yellow colored.
Was wondering if there was a "tone" difference in these or just looks.
whatever it's finished in has more to do with the color than the wood itself, imo. normally 'vintage tint' finishes are more yellow, where plain satin or gloss finishes appear more white. that being said, maple does have color variation mostly due to the type of maple that it is see -> Invalid Link Removed for really detailed descriptions of a few types.

Actually there is bound to be differences in colour of natural materials. However this seems to be at it most when its old. Some wood goes almost black. I have two '78 P bass necks. One is a war horse with fag burns and all sorts of bashes and dings and is way darker than the other, that's been kept like a baby. It's mostly darkening of the lacquer but the wood has darkened with age. Probably left out of its case for a lot longer than the other.
