P-Bass pickups

I recently got a really good deal on a 1992 MIM P Bass which I am rebuilding. The pickups seem ok but the rest of the electronics are scratchy and worn out. I'm replacing potentiometers, wires, knobs, pickguard, etc..Would you keep the stock Fender pickups or replace them?

Try it with the stock pickups and see if you like the sound. No sense in fixing what ain't broke !

If you don't like the sound, let us know what you don't like...what you are looking for tone-wise....what amp you have....strings....all that stuff, and maybe we can help you find the tone you want without you having to spend too much time and money.

:)

I'm pretty much a classic rock guy. Looking for a smooth, warm tone as opposed to in your face. Couldn't really get a handle on the present tone cause the potentiometers are shot. I understand the '92 to '96 MIM's are some of the best produced. I play thru a late model 60w bassman, and other times thru a Peavey Mark lll head and an Avatar 2-12" cab. The tech at Bass Central sez keep the stock Fenders. Strings are DR Black Beauties 45/105. Opinions?

Hi Guys,

I am about to start my Custom Bass Project and I'm ordering a Nordstrand MM4.2 as a start. If i want my sound to be passive, do i need a pre-amp for it? I wanted to know a lot about this and understand how this would come to fruition since i'm new on electronics side of the bass and this is my first (hopefully not the last since it is too pricey) custom made bass. I don't want to waste my money on a wrong purchase.

I would appreciate your help.

Thanks!

The stock Fenders are possibly what you need, but if not, then I would think that (based on your description) you'd be happy with Fender Original '62s, DiMarzio Model P 122s, or Lindy Fralins.
