Excellent video and song choice. The ‘68 sunburst was tops for me. Tone on that was right in the pocket. My first bass was one just like that, bought used for $275 in 1974, but I was young and foolish at the time and didn’t hang on to it. :rollno:

This had me curious, for the sake of comparison, to fully appreciate of all the ingredients that go into making a certain unique sound.

Besides the amp pushed just to the edge breakup/distortion, I suspect the Ultra-Low switch on the SVT amp head was switched on for this recording track was one of those things. Ampeg Ultra-Low is generally fine for small rooms and for some recordings but not so much for live performance mixing in large spaces.

Plus, plectrum on new or newish Rotosound Swing 66 SS rounds, along with tremble tones rolled down to tame the highest highs.

No losers in that bunch! And great playing/demo.

My favorites were #1 and #3. #1 was the best pick-style tone to my ears, while #3 was my favorite for finger-style. I'm no slapper, so I'll let you slap-meisters fight that one out! :D

Although that being said...That is the Custom shop bass I have lusted after since I first saw one....and it it did not win my number one spot sound...
But I would still take it over all the other basses there.

Hmph…well, that really got me down. I had already cleared a space in the rack for the ‘68, where it would not have to sit next to any other ‘bursts. I would have treated it sooo well…:crying:

But then I went ahead and made my own Pbass Grand Master Expert poster with my real (not Internet) name on it, forged James Jamerson’s signature awarding it to me, taped it to a bare wall, and mixed up a batch of top shelf Margaritas to drink while sitting alone admiring it under the flickering light of a failing fluorescent tube.

So, as you can clearly see, I am a “winner” after all…:bassist::bored:

Although they sound very similar, they are all different in sound, feel, setup and overall impression. I like something from everyone of them. Narrow nut at Postmodern makes it very comfortable and fast for playing. I also love the neck of 1979. Maruszczyk feels so good in hands, one of the finest neck finishes and profiles I ever touched. But 1968 is something different from all the others...:)
