P Bass sounding weird and distorted.... 1 week old??

Just traded in my old bass for a brand new MIM precision. Love the way it played, and felt more natural to me than the Jazz bass. Took it along to rehersal and it sounded amazing, so much power! Really punchy, was very happy with it. Then i decided to modify the scratchplate....

I only took the scratchplate off and replaced with another one, but ever since i did it, it's not sounded the same. It's sounded distorted, with loads of sustain, especially on the A string. Nowhere near as loud as it was the first time (had to roll the amp up to halfway when i was playing it on less than a quarter) and it didn't cut through the band at all and had lost all it's punch. I also had to force my lead into the Jack input, it seemed to be stuck on something and wouldn't go all the way in until I forced it. Also, for about five minutes, the tone knob stopped working altogether. We were turning it back and forth, and it was making no difference to the sound

What the hell did I do to it? I didn't touch any of the electrics-save for the Jack input, which after me and a band mate investigated, turned out to have been turned the wrong way and was hitting the inside of the body before the Jack was all the way in. We rectified that though and couldn't see anything else wrong with it, no loose wires, anything, but it still sounded dreadful, although the tone knob started working again.

Any ideas? could I have broken the jack somehow? You would figure (well I would) that if the jack breaks, it breaks properly and doesn't work anymore. But it's still working, just sounding rubbish!

I've got someone to have a look at it, but if they can't find anything wrong with it, I was considering that wiring upgrade kit they sell for the P Bass, are they worth the fuss or a waste of time?

Cheers

i did the exacttt same thing you did. i changed my pickguard and my pots are going out now and its a 08 american standard p bass. i think the precision bass wiring kit it perfect and im going to purchase it and have my tech rewire my bass.

maybe the original pickguard had shielding tape and the new one didn't, so now the pots and the jack aren't grounded to each other anymore?
