P/J Pickup Controls

Hi, just wondering if someone could explain to me the difference between a 3 way switch/1V/1T control setup like on the pbass plus and a 2V/1T setup like on a pbass special.

I'm interested in rewiring a squier pbass special which is why I'm asking. I'm open to interesting control suggestions.

A 3 way has these options:
Solo J
Both equal
Solo P

And 2 vol/tone allows you to blend them.

Pros of toggle: Ease/speed of use
Pros of 2 vol: Ability to fine tune.

Of course, if you were a little more electronic savy and knew exactly what kind of blends you wanted, you could wire in resistors to achieve blends other than solo/equal. But I have to leave SOME research to you.

Is that to say that turning one of the volume knobs to 0 on the pbass special doesn't completely isolate the other pickup?? It seemed to sound like it to me when I was experimenting (but I'm new to bass).

By "isolate", you mean remove?

When you turn a volume control down to "0", it should be connecting the pickup's hot directly to ground at 0 ohms. The pickup should not stay in the circuit at all.

No, the outputs of the pots are in parallel, so there is still the resistance from signal to ground from the J pickup's pot.

Looking at the wiring diagram, I think i see what you mean. Could I get around this by keeping both volume pots but adding a 3 way? Something like this

Yeah, that's what I did with mine, and that's what Jordan just mentioned.

That is very useful. I think that's what I will do also. Thanks for all your help . I will look into that treble/bass cut, sounds interesting
