P Retro - with a "twist?"

I'm digging the idea of putting the John East P Retro preamp into a single pickup, humbucker-equipped bass of mine. This bass currently has a coil tap function on the volume knob though, and I'd like to keep the option for variety's sake.

Do any of you know of a preamp or wiring scheme that would allow for a two knob (stacked or otherwise) solution + coil tap? I don't really care if I lose the passive tone control - although of course, more options are always better! I imagine that if I were to install a P Retro itself, I would have to put the tap onto a mini-toggle or something.

Let's see the bass in question so we know what we are working with... do you have a nice size control cavity to work with? Pickguard? Control plate? Rear mounted controls?

There are a few preamps, like the Aguilar OBP which are virtually limitless in your options as long as you have room to stash the module and battery.

The P-Retro looks like a real nice unit... if you can stand the modification it would take to install the mini toggle for the coil split.

Here is an Aguilar OBP-2 wiring diagram using two knobs and a active/passive push pull... you can use this as a launching point and mod the diagram to reconfigure the push pull for the coil tap instead .

I'm not precious with my gear - I'm happy to whip out the dremel or router and cut as necessary. As it stands currently, there's certainly more room under the pickguard than there is in a standard Precision bass, so I'm not really worried about space. The one thing I'd rather not do is make it rear-mounted... I'm pretty sure I should be able to mount everything to the pickguard anyway.

Then I would go for the East... I dig all the options it packs. Easy-peasy to put a toggle in front of it to manage the coil split.

Haha! It's the polarizing Gibson LP JR DC tribute bass, in ebony black. I've had it for a couple of months now and am ready to start customizing it... I've already started, by adding a hipshot supertone bridge.
