Passive P: DiMarzio vs. Delano vs. Joe Barden?

That does well for me.
I have Delano in my Fender P and it is wonderful. Output is very impressive for passive and the sound is very full and rich.
(And it replaced the quite nice Custom Shop pickup that came in the 2012 AmStds.)

Are you sure? Those four evenly-spaced large magnets should cover three strings pretty well. Have you tried non-rail pickups?

He might need blades as much for aesthetics as for tone. I know for me if something looks off center, it has the potential to drive me nuts, even if it functions fine.
Well, believe me, I've had some experience with this stuff. Even if the pickup has adjustable pole pieces, it's kind of a drag for me because some poles will have to be higher than others to adjust for the fact that they are not getting enough of a specific string, and then I hit these pole pieces with my long fingernails, etc.
It's just a bit of a drag and I've learned from trial and error that I'm better off going with blades and not have to worry about all that. There are enough good pickups out there with blades that I don't feel especially limited by the situation.

Ok, that's good. I know that sometimes polepieces work just fine when the strings don't visually line up, and I didn't want you to exclude those options based on assumptions. Empirical evidence is best here, and I'm glad to hear you've already experimented with them. Carry on!

You may also want to consider AGI-Lace, specifically their Aluma-P. I prefer rails in general, too, but really only have experience with the DiMarzio. I would recommend wiring for series/parallel; there are some very good and usable tones there. Cheers!
Really? I've read all sorts of stuff on how series switching sounds really weak on bass. Huh.
