Passive to Active Pu's

My main workhorse is a beauty. But im an ecclectic guy and i can't leave well enough alone... got to always try something new (sometimes with hazardous results)
NOW! to my question for you all!
Are pickups passive or active?

My old bass which i love dearly is slowly decaying and i want to salvage as much from it as i can. It has a single ibanez humbucker (im guessing it's an ibanez pickup cause it's an ibanez). and i want to put that humbucker on my peavey bridge position because i think that would sound amazing. but the peavey is active. would it make a possibility to change the pickups?

I put a J-Retro active kit on my 1965 Fender Jazz which used the original pick-ups, it worked fine.

so does active controls only alter the sound after it's come fromt he pickups? from the wiring to the preamp to the amp?
the pu's remain unscathed in the process?

yeah the sound comes from the pickups into your active eq where you can shape the sound before it goes to your amp, with a passive set up you can only cut (or reduce) output be it bass or treble but with a active set up you can boost as well as cut so the scope for different sounds is greatly increased. most pickups are passive but you can get active pickups but there no need to change to active pickups unless you realy want too, your old passive pickups will work fine on a active eq, infact I don't like the sound of active pickups too much as they sound to hi fi for my liking and lack any natural warmth, still horse's for course's.
