I was thinking of picking up an Ernie Ball Jr. volume pedal http://guitars.musiciansfriend.com/product/Ernie-Ball-VP-JR.-Passive-Volume-Pedal?sku=152107, but I notice that all the descriptions of it mention that it's great for passive instruments. Could I get away with playing an active instrument with this?

Yes, but the 'taper' of the volume will change. (the volume pedal will respond differently than you expect it to, or at least, differently than with a passive signal)
I use it with an active MM Jazz bass, it works fine. The volume is tapered indeed, which makes for a more effective response to the foot motion.
