pc notebook: hp or gateway?

so, my old g3 imac is about to bite the dust. and while i'd love to get another mac, a notebook would be more useful for me and a pc would be more in line with my pocketbook.

anyway, i've narrowed it down to two: hp pavillion or gateway. everything's pretty much the same (intel pentium dual core processor, 1gb ram, built in wireless) except the gateway has the larger 17" widescreen (to the hp's 15.4") and slightly larger 160 gb hard drive (to the hp's 120 gb).

my girlfriend works on an hp and likes her computer. since we have experience with that, i'm leaning toward the hp. but i'm doing that for no good reason? the larger screen and slightly larger hard drive is enticing. i've heard good things about gateway's customer service, but my gut feeling is that hp makes better or more reliable products. is that unfounded?

any opinions/experiences/hard figures welcome.

I said say out of the two, HP by far. I have had great experiences with them and not so great ones with Gateway, so I may be biased, but I think HP clearly is better.

As far as other possible competitors, I also like Dell Laptops a lot, and they also have some great deals.

I got my Dell laptop (Inspiron E1505), which has 2ghz dual core, 1gig ram, 80gig HD (7200 rpm), 256mb video card, built in wireless, the best monitor available, 15.4" widescreen, etc... all for $1250. Good stuff. (Dell also has a nice 17" laptop, since you showed interest in that)

I'd really try to get as good of a deal you can from any of the more reputable companies. Also try to get a leaner machine, you probably don't need any anti-virus at all nowadays, or at least if you are going to pay for one, get a better one like AVG's priced one.

I'd have to say Dell as well. We used to have only Dell laptops after the HP (Compaq at the time) laptops kept blowing up. The Dells we used never seemed to have a problem, except for the Sony battery recall (which only affected about 8 computers in our whole company!) I can't say as I ever met an HP I really liked. But it's your dough, just get the extended warranty if it's available. The company that bought us out is an HP desktop, IBM laptop, shop. So far I'm not all that impressed with the IBMs (I've Been Misled! ;):D). I'm hanging on to my Dell Latitude D600 as long as possible!

I had that 15.4 widescreen for 1 year. Awesome!! But I wanted a bigger screen, so I sold it and bought the HP 17 widescreen. Now, I've had it for 1 year and NO problems. Also, the other 15.4, NO problems...sold it to a friend. Both machines are running flawlessly.

GO HP!!!

You'll have lots of trouble filling up 160GB or 120GB....

I'd get a Dell Inspiron 6400: 1.86GHz duo core, 15.4in LCD screen, 2GB RAM, 160GB hard drive, 256MB nVidia GeForce 7300, Intel internal wireless card, all for 834 dollars. That's $834. Best deal you can find on the internet man! These are some of the best system specs for a laptop for 834 dollars, once again, you can't beat it.

I really like Gateway's desktops. I've never had any problems with them and they do have terrific support. But I haven't really dealt with their laptops so I can't comment on them. I have never really had a problem with HP laptops and they seem to make a really good laptop. From my experience I would stay away from Dell laptops. I have never dealt with a good one. Every single Dell laptop I've ever used or messed with has been nothing but a disaster from the start. Just my opinions though.

My roommate has a Gateway - its 6 months old - had to send it in for repairs - the left hinge was breaking - pulling apart from the case - wouldn't close. It was repaired and now fine. Her Gateway was $300 less than my Dell - I would have probably bought it. :bassist:

Alienware is sweet... if you don't mind paying an extra $1000 for the brand name. I always liked them, I am just cheap.

As for the decision here, I need to stick up for gateway. They have been the only computers in my house and have had very little problems. The only problems they have had, are user error. Gateway tech support is American based, always available, friendly, and damn good.

+1 for gateway, nothing but good experiences on my side.
