Peavey Cirrus Crack in neck? Worth Returning or keep?

Risk vs. Reward.

$2250 seems a bit steep for a used Cirrus, lots of choices for that many dollars.

However, if you got to have it (or can't return it), I'd be very surprised if this couldn't be put right by a qualified and experienced tech (with emphasis on experienced and qualified). It may not be a cheap repair, but done right you can forget about it and enjoy the bass, and what's that worth?

Peavey USA Cirrus Tiger Eye 5'ers aren't super common in the wild but that price still seems high. There will be another.

Anyway, I'd go with Bruce Johnson's advice and have it really checked out. The crack will need to be addressed if you keep it.

They are great basses, if it's otherwise awesome it might be worth the trouble of dealing with the repair if it's a keeper.... but resale can't possibly be that high... could it?

I guess that's a long way of saying I'd expect to send it back and look for another one.

When my used Cirrus arrived, the strings were slack. I tuned it up and the action was horrible. Truss rod was working but I was freaking before I got it even close. What kind of bridge cable strings are these? And stainless to boot?

Into the trash they went. Serious back bow with my favorite DR pure blues VW set. The Cirrus and I sighed with relief as I loosened the truss rod to a perfect near flat. And there it stayed.

Im just saying, the Cirrus came with stupid heavy, stiff, high tension strings. Adjusting the truss rod against all that tension was scary. That could have caused the crack.

My bet is that set up with light strings, you’ll be fine. Get ready to enjoy that Ken Smith vibe.

I’d ask for an extension on the return period to see what’s going on, and get the bass set up like you want with your favorite strings.

Check in with the USA Cirrus thread. There are Cirrus parts still available, including necks.

These are great basses, and the tiger eyes with all the upgrades are the cream of the crop.

Price was on the high end, but the Cirrus bass prices have been on a steady upward trend.

Hope it works out for you!

Oh man that’s nothing! Keep it if it plays good. I have not read any other posts yet but I see nothing that suggests any sort of acute structural issues being that it follows the grain. If the neck has a glued on fretboard that only serves to reinforce the wood, but as stated earlier there isn’t an any direct pressure on that fissure that would promote separating especially with 6ply of lumber.

So I bought this bass and it has already shipped so i cant stop it but i can return it I was not aware of this crack until I watched the video they sent me a second time of it. They said they can feel it, but that its a surface crack. Its a 5 string tiger eye with the large peavey logo on it. I am wondering if its worth it. Paid 2250 for it. So given that I turst your guys expertise on this crack and the price if its worth it or to return it? Thank you all in advance for your help.

Speculate all you want on what caused the crack, and if/when it will get worse, but there's no getting away from the fact that the neck is cracked. That is never good. $2250 sounds way too high for that piece, to me. Surely an undamaged example can be had at that price?

Since you're asking...I vote return, unequivocally.

Called a local repair place and they said "We believe the truss rod has been over extended and caused that type of crack our opinion would be to refuse it." would you guys agree?

I would agree with that assessment. It is entirely possible for the forces exerted by a truss rod to cause that sort of damage or notably, damage to an even more extensive degree. Some readers of other bass forums might recall a a very attractive Shuker fretless bass on which the truss rod dramatically let go, resulting in it punching a hole in the back of the neck, much to the new owner's dismay. With a high quality repair and a significant cash adjustment that Cirrus may make sense, but as it stands now I think you have paid too much for it. I hope you can resolve this situation to your satisfaction.

It's still a weakness waiting to become a failure with a strong shock or perfect jolt, inevitable in the life of this kind of instrument. You can only baby it so much. There is significant tension in the structure already. Get out while you can and find another. Or demand a major price adjustment. They made more than one.
How? How is it “waiting to become a failure”? Like throwing it off a building??? Well sure. Anything will break but normal playing and care. A million years of life left in that thing. Sure it’s an eyesore and the buyers remorse is probably brutal, but objectively the bass has a little booboo. Play on.

Someone who absolutely wants it, warts and all, will buy it. That much is guaranteed.

So the seller was aware of the crack, but didn't mention it until you brought it up after the sale? IMO that's a condition that should be disclosed on any instrument as part of the description. If it's an easy fix, I would expect the seller to have it done on a bass selling for $2250 US.
I would return it.

Ask them if they will cover repairs. If so, then take it to a luthier and have them look at it. It will need repair -Surface cracks will grow - get it inspected and get a top shelf repair estimate. Send a copy to the seller - hopefully they will cover it, either by paying you or paying the luthier directly. I bought an instrument that had hidden damage - the seller didn't know about it and was apologetic - and I had the seller pay the guitar tech directly. Made it all legit and I didn't have to get involved with the money end of it

A crack like that is a condition that would have to be disclosed in a listing, otherwise it's a potentially significant problem that could affect the usability of the instrument and/or, with this thread as evidence, your ability to resell it.

OP is unclear whether or when the seller disclosed the crack, but I think they probably did disclose it and the OP did not notice ("I was not aware of this crack until I watched the video they sent me a second time of it"). Can you clarify?

If the crack was disclosed prior to the sale, whether or not you noticed it, you negotiated a price considering condition and you now own the bass. The seller may not accept a return and doesn't have to.

If the seller did not disclose the crack until after you agreed to the sale, you should return it and the seller should accept the return IMO.
