Peavey Mk III series 300 CHS head

I just picked up a Peavey Mk III Series 300 CHS bass head for $90 offa Craigslist. The gain pots are a little scratchy... I am gonna put a little contact cleaner through em. I took my Ashdown Mag Deep 2x10 in to test it and the guy played his Ric through it, and I thought it sounded pretty darn good. $90 seemed like a darn good price. I have read pretty good stuff about these online. This is older, I think, but I can't find a year on it. I think I got a deal.

I am pretty happy with my rig, really. I have an Ashdown EB 180-15" combo and I add the 2x10 extension. I have never played anywhere that that was not enough, and I really like the sound. But I was thinking the other day: I always have a spare bass at gigs, spare cables... Probably oughtta have a spare amp... If the "head" in my combo goes out, I can hook the 15" in the combo and the 2x10 up to the Peavey... Seemed like a good idea, anyhow...

Yes, as long as the ashdown has a power amp in (which most large combos seem to have). The only thing to possibly worry about is mashing impedance by connecting the cabs in series and ending up with a 16ohm load or something, which shouldn't damage the amp, but will reduce the output.

Hmmm... I don't understand a lot of the technical stuff... BUT: One thing I like about the Ashdown combo is that the head and speaker are not hardwired together... In other words, the back of the "head" part has two outputs (parallel, right?), one of which has a plug going to the "cab" part. I can unplug the speaker (the 15") in favor of the 2x10 alone, just to compare the two. I have more than once thought about getting a box or case and separating the "head" from the cab. Anyhow, the Peavey has the same setup in back it appears (2 outputs, paralelled) so should the "head" of the combo go out, This should drive both cabs... I think.

Course, my guitarist thinks I should go stereo...

You should be fine then. I find that, technical stuff aside. If you can plug one thing into another (within reason), things will work. Plus it's darn near impossible to hurt a peavey

A couple shots of contact cleaner, and all scratchiness is gone... quiet as the proverbial mouse... I am uberpleased....

Ummm... anyone know what "shelving" is? It has a 7 band EQ with a Hi shelving knoba and a low shelving knob... I wonder if Peavey has old manuals on their site like some other companies. Gonna go check...

Edit: Just got it. They had it archived. Very cool. I am increasingly pleased with myself. And my summer vacation just started too... WOOHOO!

I think this is an old thread, but do you guys have any tips on using these heads? I have one and also use a pre amp. Where are you setting knobs for volume? The pre and post volume stuff throws me off and minor eq adjustments seem to make huge differences in tone.
