You have a powered cabinet meaning speakers and a power amp all in one box.

You would need a preamp to plug your bass into that would then drive the amplifier which could be in a pedal format.
The big question before spending money is are the speakers and amplifier both in good condition, or work at all for that matter.

The Peavey 500 BH is a powered cabinet with two 10" speakers meant for bass, meaning it is a cabinet with an integrated power amplifier. Here is the manual:

You need a preamplifer (pedal or rackmount) to connect between your bass and the powered speaker. The preamp raises the signal level of your bass to a useable point for the integrated power amplifier, as well as providing a tone shaping circuit, commonly referred to as an "equalizer" or EQ for short. I'm sure there will be plenty of suggestions from others what to use, but something as simple as a Sansamp would probably suffice. Here is a simple explanation how to hook it up:
Bass guitar output --> preamplifier input, preamplifier output --> 500 BH input.

There are so many on the market! It's going to come down to what tone you like and what your budget is. Here's a quick list:
- Hartke Bass Attack 2 Bass Preamp Direct Box with Overdrive.
- MXR M81 or M80 Bass Preamp Pedal.

- Ampeg SCRDI Bass DI Preamp with Scrambler Overdrive.

Looks like it is intended for the top end of a biamped bass rig . Not for use as a standalone bass cab , Peavey specs say it's supposed to be for above 250Hz . You would need a dedicated powered sub to use for bass guitar .
Ok so it needs more than a preamp? I'm thinking I should just sell it and buy a combo amp.
