Peavey Super Ferrite Pickups

WHOA! I just had my first deep dive with an 80's Peavey Foundation and I'm totally impressed with their super ferrite pickups. They have a very warm vintage like tonal quality, high output without the attached negative qualities of an overwound pickup, growl like mad, have tons of texture and are very expressive to varied hand position. I can't get a bad tone out of them!

This is EXACTLY how I'd like my Fender jazz to sound. Short of routing out my jazz and dropping in a set of these super ferrites, are there any other alternatives for a J bass that will get me close while still fitting in the stock routes?
 
Also a fan of the Super Ferrites, but no idea how you would get even close to that tone in a J housing. Good luck!

I agree with this. I've seen SFs out of the housing and they are large. I believe your only choice would be to route pockets. Give the Foundation a whirl for a while. With a good setup they're great instruments and the necks are similar to a J. Maybe a little thicker/rounder front to back and that could be reshaped by a luthier.

I'm going to open up the hood this weekend. Now I'm curious about the pickup build. Bummer that nobody has tried that exploration.

The pickups are a little brighter than I'm used to but tameable. The tone is just killer.

The neck profile is similar to the jazz, just a hair thinner and more comfortable.

PUs are single coil, blade pole piece with two bar magnets at the bottom of the blade under the coil (one each side) and are potted with epoxy and don't come apart. Won't be much to see. Very well built and reliable. Be aware that they are magnetized opposite polarity and wired out of phase to form a HB pair when both are on.
