Peavey TNT Loud Hum?

Hey guys.

I just bought a Peavey TNT 115 with the BW Speaker. Totally psyched. :D

I tested it out in the store (Guitar Center) , and remembered hearing no problems with hum. When I lugged it into my basement, I noticed there was no grounding prong in the three-prong plug... it seemed it was missing. I plugged it in at my house, and heard a loud hum. I tried four different plugs, same hum.

The cord seems "attached" to the amp, so I don't know how I'd go replacing it. All help would be appreciated.

Also, I forgot to mention, I have other guitar amps down there, and no hum at all from those. I'm using a pretty cheap guitar cable, but don't think that's an issue. Also, it hums, regardless of whether or not my bass is plugged in.
 
Buy a replacement 3 prong plug, cut the old one off your cord, put the new one on. There should be a black, white and green wire. The ground lug of the plug will be painted green, the green wire goes there. The positions of the back and white on the other two lugs doesn't matter. If it still hums the amp is defective.

This is both the answer to your problem, as well as just a good all around idea anyway.
 
If you have any skillz, go to the hardware store and buy a quality three prong plug. Cut the old off and put on the new. There will be three wires in the cable, usually black white and green. The black goes on the brass screw, the white on the silver screw and the green on the green screw. Take the plug apart, slide the casing over the cable and then install the plug. Most replacement plugs have crimp type terminals in there so you strip each wire 1/4 inch, twist the strands, insert in the crimp on the left side of the screw and tighten the screw. Slide the casing over the plug and fasten it with the screws.

If you don't have the skillz, take it to a neighbourhood handyman or appliance repair shop and turn in your man-card. If the ladies don't find you handsome, you might as well be handy.

As-is is typical, but with regard to grounding it's a safety issue. I'm sure GC won't want that liability hanging over them. Don't play that card first, but keep it in your back pocket if needed (and be sure that it's a ground problem with the amp so you don't make an ass out of yourself when playing the card).

The amp uses one of those universal 3prong power cables. If you dont feel like cutting the end off, you can just replace it.

Something doesn't sound right here. I've never run across an amp in good working order that hums loudly when its ground is lifted. I say something's going on inside that amp that ain't quite right. I'd vote for a return/refund.

There is also a ground lift button on the back of the amp the OP could check to see if its depressed or not.

While I agree with Bill's post I disagree with the comment on the black and white wiring. The new plug will have a silvery, sometimes wider, pin and that's the neutral and the white wire should be connected to that. The brass looking one is the line and the black connects to that.

What you're referring to is the 2 pole polarized plug, and those do have one wider prong. The problem is that if a 2 pole polarized plug is miswired you end up with a hot chassis, and the potential for disaster. That problem is eliminated by not using a grounded chassis at all, with double insulated cases as used on power tools and kitchen appliances. But gear requires a grounded chassis. Neutral is not connected to the chassis, only the third prong ground. If the hot and neutral are reversed it doesn't matter.

I agree to some extent BUT with anything involving AC mains it's best to do it right the first time.

Were that the case there never would have been any such thing as two wire AC to begin with. It should have been three wire balanced from the get go. So who do you blame, Tesla?
