Hey there, I am in the market for a back up head as my Ampeg is heavy to move. I have a chance to purchase a peavey Tour 700 for $150. Ive had peavey heads in the past and while they may not be the best tone wise, they never broke on me. What do you all think? Solid deal? Any reasons I should not go for it?
For $150 I'd say why not. I had one as my first 'real' amp and it was a great amp for me. Lots of power and the EQ is pretty flexible. It has a very clean tone though, so if you want some grit in your tone you'll need to throw a pedal in front. What Ampeg amp are you running? The Peavey isn't a lightweight at all, I'm pretty sure it weighs close to 30LBS.
I have an ampeg SVT II, its like 90lbs, so this would be much easier to lift. And yeah I kindof thought that for $150 I probably cant go wrong.
Dive on it. I used one with a Peavey TVX 410 (Holy crap those things are heavy) for a long time with a metal band, and it was rock-solid reliable. Agree with Mattmanbass, it's very clean; it actually took the growl out of my Jazz and Stingray basses. Lots of power for about 30lbs and its Peavey so it's gonna last.
Well considering I'm now playing an SVT, I'll say that it's not going to sound like your Ampeg. I feel like this amp would pair really well with the VT bass pedal or VTRM to get you that Ampeg tone if you like. I'd scoop it up before someone else does, that seems like a pretty good price.
Yeah I don't really expect it to sound like my ampeg. Just need a good reliable back up. Im going to pick it up tonight.
So I got this thing home and played it last night. I was very impressed with it! Sounded much better than I anticipated! Very happy with it
Glad you like it. You got a heck of a good deal on that amp. I paid $225 for a MKIII Bass head that's 35 years old and surely doesn't sound as good. Always works, though--which is why I love Peavey.
Hi mattmanbass, I have a Tour 700 Head into a GK NEO212-II. Great Amp, great tone, lots of headroom. With the EQ i can get any tone i want. When i set the pregain at 2 o'clock and roll of the highs on my P-Bass, i get kind of a tubelike overdrive/growl (not a real tubesound but sounds great in the mix). I love the amp and i love Peaveys reliability. I have a Peavey Bandit and a Mark IV Basshead and they both work since decades without a failure. 150 Bucks? Great deal.
I just put a tour 450 and a 410 TVX on lay away at a local music shop. Both have never left the store! I thought the TVX was used, but it's been a demo in a store that is mostly pianos and wind instrument sales. I can't wait to bring them home a put them through the paces with the band. I have a Mark IV as well and love the tone and reliability. Peavey is my choice for that reason alone.
Here a Video of John Taylor (Duran Duran) with a Peavey Tour 700 Head and Peavey Bass (playing starts at 5:00 min, but lot's talking): “I’ve never had the kind of relationship with my basses one often hears guitar players talk about having with their 6-string lovers. I don’t cook breakfast with my bass strapped on, and I’ve been known to take it to bed with me only once or twice in desperate times. I never became a real tech head, and I’m still using Peavey amplifiers." JOHN TAYLOR
It is!!! Just a couple of days now. I've had one band rehearsal and a little time otherwise to tweak. So far I am really happy! Lots of bottom end and punch. The volume is plenty loud to battle two geetars and a drummer. I've found it pretty easy to dial in a tone that I like. Pretty much tried all the combos with the eq on or nor, the octover on and off. There isn't anything I don't like yet!
Oh! I thought by the "second cab" you meant a TVX for two different places. My bad. It's a second 212 you need!
