Pedals with dual XLR outs

I was talking with my FOH friends, and they are in agreement that running two bass channels is the way to go; one clean channel, one dirt channel.

There's tons of preamp pedals that have dirt channels, but it all runs into the same out. The only pedal I've found that I think is what I'm trying to achieve is this:

This pedal has separate cab sims in each out, which sounds like it would do what we have been discussing, but I was wondering if there were other pedals like this.

The only other consideration I had was to run two preamp pedals and I think you'd put an AB/Y pedal in between the front of the chain pedals and the preamps to feed all of those pedals into both preamps, but I'm not sure.

Any suggestions?

I had been sending two signals to FOH (one clean one overdriven) for some time (one or two years). The idea behind it was that the sound tech will blend them as he sees fit.

I stopped doing that because I didn’t have good experience with it. Most sound techs just chose one signal (usually the clean signal) and disregarded the other one.

Nowadays, I do the blending myself using crossover blenders and send only one (blended) signal to FOH.

I don't think I'd trust the FOH guy at the local DIY venue to do this, but the guys I'm talking to are church staff with all the high end resources available to them : )

I don’t think lack of resources was the issue in my case. It was time. The sound techs I have been working with don’t have time to play with blending two Bass signals during the gig. They have other things to do with higher priority…

If I was in a touring band that had proper sound guy or you always run your own sound or have your own sound guy every time, I would do this if I could. However, I only get one XLR with my current band's setup and the same when it comes to playing shared stages we play on.

Excellent for home recording.

If it is practical for your situation, go for it!

Whenever I use a clean/dirt setup I want the clean signal to to be truly CLEAN, as in DRY with no speaker sim. I find that a truly clean DI signal blends much nicer with an amp/cab (or simulated amp/cab) than another "clean" signal with a cabsim or other processing.

A truly clean/dry DI signal will provide deeper, tighter lows than a "clean" signal with a cabsim. The dirt/preamp signal will fill in the mids and make the bass cut through the mix. This way the clean/dirt channels won't compete for the same sonic space but compliment each other better.

With this kinda setup you can simply insert a DI box in front of the dirt/preamp pedal for the clean channel and use the xlr out on the dirt/preamp pedal for the dirt channel (or use a second DI box after the dirt/pre).

This will give you FAR more options. With dirt it's important to find the RIGHT kind of dirt and you're limiting your options significantly if you only consider pedals with two channels and two xlr outs.

Of course, if you want a cabsim on both channels this won't work.

How much overdrive do you need for a church gig? What kind of church is this, exactly?

You might be surprised at how much drive is used on some of the modern worship music, in some cases it's quite a lot, like RAT on full drive a lot. People also use those EHX Bass Microsynth pedals a lot, which gives that drive + octave sound. For church stuff my own board has three different gain stages, and there is no truly clean tone at any point. I'm a little resistant to the bass microsynth only because it's almost a cliche at this point, but they do sound great!

This guy shows both of those things around 10:20 here:

That'll work. You could also just have one that has drive, and run through the "through" or "tuner out" into your amp, and pull that signal off the DI on your amp.

Or, just get the blend right on your drive pedal.
