Pending NBD: Am Pro I Fender Precision Bass

Number 2 is your lifetime bass, that's "the one" from your list.
I'm a sucker for Telecaster shaped (original P) headstocks, but the Mike Dirnt novelty might wear off and you need a perfect MIA P-bass no matter what. The 60th Anniversary basses are fantastic.
What kind of job did you get? Give 110% and take all the training they offer and don't get complacent. If there is a team meeting, prepare for it and always have a good question in your back pocket to show them your a thinking being with leadership skills. Be a team player.

I must agree with other posters here that that Am Standard from the era just before Fender released the Pro series is your best bet. I've had a couple and will keep the remaining one for life. Probably the most comfortable neck of any modern Fender IMO. I know you think it's unlikely, but if you can find a deal on a Pro II I'd also consider that. I love the finish on those necks, though a little chunkier than the pre-Pro series. Didn't care for the Pro I. I found it bland in sound, feel, and looks... very light colored neck finish...just kind of stark. But that was a Pro I Jazz and only 1 example.

I have the Fender American Professional Pro I (made in 2017). It is antique olive and has a rosewood fingerboard. While I did eventually swap the pickup for a Fender 62 custom, there is nothing wrong with the factory V Mod pickup. Just make sure your strings are centered between the polepieces (if possible) and set the tilt of the pickup to match the curve of the strings (E and G sides should be lower than A and D sides). I had good results with raising the pickup as close to the strings as I could without a) it making contact with moving strings and b) interfering with my playing. I guess the poles were maybe .25 inch away from the strings.

The seller lives four hours away and I talked to my wife and she wasn't comfortable with us going all the way there for a bass (or even half way) primarily due to weather conditions not being so good.

That's reasonable and it's not a bass I'm willing to fight my wife about. Is it a darn rare model that I may never see again? Yes. Is it worth risking my marriage? Nah.

I'll settle for the AMPROI since it's only an hour away and I do like green…

The AMPROI is a fine bass. There is really nothing I dislike about it.

From what I can gather, the V-Mod I pickup is hit or miss and a lot of people tend to swap it out for something else.

No carve neck heel which kind of sucks but I'll manage.

What else should I look out for?

Dude, please hold out for a Pro II.

You *will* find one in that price range, and it is worth finding one based on the occasion. If not - any chance your partner would be ok with spending a bit more and getting a new Pro II.

Alternatively, you could also look for a 2016ish American Elite Precison. Those are amazing.

I prefer the Pro II over the Pro I, but mostly because of the pickup. I really disliked the VMod I on both P and J basses, and I'm not finicky about pickups. However, replacing the pickup is a fairly inexpensive mod if you don't like the stock one.

Not the best 5-string bass, imo.

I'm not a 5-string guy anyways. I had one for a few months to try to get into it, a SBMM Ray 5, but I just couldn't find a reason to keep it. I barely played the lower register and I have no problem tuning my E down to D for drop D tuning in between sets.

I got a steal on reverb a 2021 American Pro II Precision V($1,000), and I got to say its my first 5 string, and its amazing. I fear I may not go back to the 4.....The neck is really comfortable in my hand, the pickups sound pretty close to my Vintage 63 I installed in my 4 string pbass when the tone is rolled off...the bottom B string is crazy good, I run it through a Cali 76 bass compressor and it sounds good. Again I got what I considered a really good deal and got lucky its in mint condition, with flats on it....

Mine has become my #1 bass and it's 100% stock
