It's weird. I've always found it weird. It's weird for basses, cars, ships and other inanimate objects.

Captain Kirk had a great line about risk but the last word always made it sound like he's talking about a giant obese woman rather than the Starship Enterprise.

It is simply grammatically correct if you are going to assign gender at all.
I usually go with "it".

I don't know, the former sounds mighty French to me and you should know how I feel about the French.
I'm French speaking, and in French, we don't have an equivalent for "it", so each word as a gender. Bass (and guitar) gender in french is female, so "she" would be grammatically correct... in French.
And when I refer to any of my basses in English, I refer to as "it", not "she"
Ah, a Canadian. That explains the better sense!
I took four years of French in high school so I appreciate the gender stuff in the romance (?) languages. I love old France but things change...

It always irked me too, but now since there's so many genders to choose from I'm considering reconsidering this whole things. Looks like I can actually assign a different one to each of my basses too:

I get the language influence, having done French, Spanish and Latin in school, but it is odd.
I can't say it bothers me too much, although seeing how some folk seem to take a LOT of time polishing and buffing and caressing and whispering endearments to their cars, basses, knives and fishing rods is disturbing.
