He was one of my favorites back in the early days. Both he and Jaco were contemporaries doing some very unconventional an interesting things with fretless basses in the 70's.
He made far more of an impression on me than Jaco about the possibilities of fretless, plus I heard him first(Eno's Another Green World VS Metheny's Bright Sized Life). Got to see him with Brand X a couple of times as well.

Saw him with Brand X with Kenny Grohowski (sp?) on drums before their guitarist died. Monster show.
Although I heard Jaco first, the impression Percy (and Brand X) made was on another level. And it lasts to today.
Percy is a big influence on my fretless playing and tone quest and Brand X was always so fresh to hear.
Got to see Percy with Phill Collins on drums. Talk about a rhythm section! Rated X
I saw them way back in '78 in NYC just before I left for college. The One Truth Band shared the bill and I think it was in Central Park. I became interested in Brand X because of the link to Genesis and remember Moroccan Roll was on my turntable a lot senior year in high school. Percy Jones was just beyond belief.
I also saw Genesis at the Garden that summer, maybe a week or two before Brand X.
To top it off, I got to see The One Truth Band again at Washington University in the spring of '79 with the Dixie Dreggs (Eric Johnson played with them). What an amazing time with so much remarkable music and such astounding musicianship.

Percy and Alphonso Johnson were the two that got me into fretless, as Jaco hadn't made the scene yet.

you are absolutely right but Eric Johnson was in the bill. I do remember that I, along with the group of friends I went with that day were tripping so, hopefully, my lapse is excusable.
It was in the Quad which was not really that large. I don't think I was more than 25 feet from the stage but we all did a lot of "floating" around that day. There were a couple of other names on the bill besides the Dixie Dreggs and Eric Johnson but I went for John McLaughlin and The One Truth Band.
Percy is the reason I started playing fretless in 1976.
I saw Brand X twice in the mid '70s, then again during their 2016 reunion tour. I have seen Percy many times with Tunnels, and Rare Blend did a double bill with them at Orion Studios in '04. We'd have some nice talks whenever I saw him.
