Double Bass Perfect EUB Under $1000

I think the NS WAV is a great bass for the money. I travelled with one in 2007 with the flight case and it operated great every night. I had the guys at NS set it up like a CR-4T with the taller bridge, and DAddario Hybrids, and it couldnt have been better! I ordered a new CR-4M this year and its awesome, but not really that much different from the WAV except the Magnetics, which unfortunately, I dont use enough to make it worth the extra price. BTW, another nice feature is the WAV is passive, so you can use what ever preamp and amplification you like to get YOUR sound!

After reading pretty much every post here trying to decide whether or not to buy a WAV, I think the consensus is that your best bet would be an Azola (if you can find one used), NS Wav 4, Ergo or Palentino (SP?)--although it seems like these benefit greatly from some modifications.

The Wav and Palentino are made in China. There is also a company called Stag that makes a reasonably priced EUB that I think is a Chinese company. Also, although I think they're Japanese, you might be able to find an Aria where your at.

If you want a EUB pretty much ready to go from the store go find a Stagg EUB. The local Music Go Round sell them as blems for $400. You would need to black out the side dots on the fingerboard because they are way off. The sound is okay and the neck/fingerboard is oaky except for feeling like it is made out of plastic. You can plug it into an amp without a preamp and start playing right away. They come 4 or 5 different colors too.

Otherwise spend more money and get a better bass like an Azola or an Eminence. Palatino's are okay if you like to do mods.

Arent the WAV's made at the same Czech plant, I believe so, because they say it on their website. The difference mainly is in the wood, which is I believe beech for the WAV and of course Maple for the CR, unless otherwise noted. I would be curious what guts or similar would sound like on an NS. Anywone tried it?

WAVs are made in China. As for info about strings, go to the WAV mega thread and read around. Lots of people have done it.

The ones we listed have a more highly curved fingerboard (so you can use a bow) and use an actual double bass scale (around 42 inches). The scale goes a long way in letting you get that "thump" sound that's indicative of a DB...along with strings, etc...

The Dean Pace is the same scale as a bass guitar and has a much flatter fingerboard (so you can't use a bow efficiently with it). Kind of like a fretless bass guitar if you turned it on its end, cut away its body and mounted it to a drum stand.
