Performance bass guitars.

First on the Louis Johnson website, and Maurice has one. I attended TB member Robear22's bass workshop were Derek Ray was the instructor and he had a five string with a ramp between the two j pickups, it sounded big and fat and punchy and snappy all rolled up into one.

I believe you're refering to Performance Guitar, here in
Los Angeles. (Hollywood)
These guys have been making and repairing guitars and
basses for at least 25 years, maybe more. The guys I know
that have had basses made by Performance are all very
happy. These are guys who tour and make a living with
their tools. If they weren't happy, they'd be selling them.
I don't see Performance basses up for sale very often. Kind
of like Tyler basses. Even if you have other basses, most of
the bassists I know keep their Tylers too.
Performance seems to do a very good "Jazz" style bass.
I "think" this is who you are refering to.

I have played my share of Performance basses and they are top notch, sound and quality. Definitely fender inspired.

Performance Basses are right up there with Lakland,Sadowsky, Atlier Z, Low End Jazz.


If you ever get a chance to check one out I would respectfully recommend doing so.

This is my only bass. I'm in love with the thing but I would never pass up a deal. I kinda want a p bass and a jazz bass instead of just having one bass.

As stated Performance guitars is L.A. based builder. Back in the day they were up there with San Dimas Charvels as to quality build but in some respects replaced Charvels or at least were a substitute for them when Charvels became a Japanese subsidiary of Jackson. The quality build of these guitars are through the roof. I sometimes see them on ebay for big bucks with no takers but can usually be had for a very reasonable price. Most if not all of these guitars were custom built or oneoff's that were sent to local guitar shops for sale. They are a great bang for the buck and in about another 10 years or so will probably become some sort of holy grail when the collectors know what they are dealing with and drive up the prices.
If the price is right you just an not go wrong.

I just spent the day at Low End Bass in Nashville and I walk away from the place with a Performance 5-String. I liked the feel of it better than a lot of the basses costing twice as much. Then I plugged it in............amazing!!!!!!!!!!!. Can someone tell me what the switch is for between the stacked treb & bass knob and the mid knob?

3 weeks ago I saw Freddy Flewellen at a church in LA playing one similiar to this one but a 6 string. And Man o man did it sound sweeet. Rumored to be for sale. . . . I was with my wife could not get to him. But the bass was sweet!

A buddy of mine gave me a Peformance bass back in the early eighties. It had PJ pick up configuration. The weird thing about that bass is that there's no truss rod adjustment nut. I'm sure it had a truss rod, but I guess it was a fixed type which required not adjustment. Being that I just switched from guitar to bass I can't remember how good it was. :smug:

I just had my friend's 5 string, Jazz type here for a while. I still
might buy it. Just a killer bass. I thought it was a little unusual
that the truss rod adjustment was under the pickguard.
My friend said he's never had to adjust it. Its also a very
easy playing bass.
I just have this huge "gas" for a Nordy. If I didn't, the
Performance 5 would be mine.
