Very unique band and Steele was an extraordinarily unorthodox singer. To describe Type O Negative to someone who has never heard them would be: James Earl Jones singing goth metal. I'm surprised nobody has attempted to rip off their sound. Closest recent sound to Type O I've heard was "She Reigns Down" by Cold Cave. But that song is more Sisters of Mercy than Type O Negative.
Most impressive Peter Steele vocals on Type O Negative songs: Christian Woman, Bloody Kisses (A death in the family), Summer Breeze (Seals and Croft cover), Be my Druidess, White Slavery, Nettie and September Sun.
On top of all that... he was a really good bass player too.

Type-O-Negative was okay, but Carnivore was truly great. Especially Retaliation.
Also Steele had his own unique style, both on bass and vocals.
