Peterson Strobostomp II problem: SOLVED! :))

I had one from a bad batch that Peterson made with the fading screen. If left on for a period of time, the display would start to fade, leaving only a blank, glowing screen. I e-mailed Peterson thinking that they would just give me instructions on how to send it back to them at my expense (bought this off of here; not the original owner). I get an e-mail back from John Norris, giving me detailed instructions on how to fix the problem myself. It took about 15 minutes once I got all the tools together (screwdriver and nut socket tool, not to mention nail clippers)

I'm not going to go into specifics on how to do it right here. Don't want to be blamed if something goes wrong. Also, if your unit is under warranty, you should probably go through Peterson first. Just wanted to share my experience with you fine people.

Glad to hear it. MY only complaint with this pedal is that it eats batteries like no other. Good thing I only use it for my setups.

It's actually quite a common problem with the SS2. Had to do the same fix on my SS2 when I had it. Don't think it's a bad batch. More like a design problem.

Can you at least tell us what the problem was, without specifics?

I mean seriously though, we've had a similar symptom with the first version, which was repaired under warranty, only to re-occur a couple of months later. The "fix" (in the case of the first StroboStomp version) was to simply re-seat a connector.
This issue has cropped up in only 1 of 2 similarly aged and abused pedals.

Mine is obviously out of warranty

I thought I mentioned the nature of the problem in my original post.

The screen was fading. The screen backlight was still on, but the numbers, letters, strobe tuning indicators, etc, were disappearing. It was getting very difficult to read.

Basically, the fix was to partially disassemble the unit and remove a single component from the circuit board.

You and me both.
The other serious problem is the cheap plastic jacks, soldered to the board, sticking out the back of the tuner... not unlike an Aphex Punch Factory Compressor.

Supposedly addressed in the SSII, but I haven't seen one in person, or photos of the back yet.

It's not hard to fix, but you really shouldn't have to fix a tuner that costs this much.

... still I like it a lot.
