Petition for Fender Mustang

Correct me if I am wrong but the Fender Mustang was never meant to be a top of the line Fender bass, it was meant more as a budget-priced student bass. Fender has changed a lot since then, there aren't any made in America budget Fenders anymore. That is the purpose of their MIM and Squier lines. It would make more sense for Fender to continue making the Squier Mustangs or start making a MIM version. It keeps in the spirit of the original and might actually be priced right to sell.

If you read some of the threads here, Squier brought out the VM Mustang first.
The Jaguar SS followed shortly after. The SS was about $100 less, and is a P/J configuration.
I guess most people thought they were getting more for their money by getting the Jag.

I have both and like both.
But if i were to get another one, I'd rather get the Mustang,
even though it might cost a little more, and only have one pickup.

Squire VM Mustang was a budget classic. Fit and finish are good but the sound is just killer.

It's odd that they "weren't selling" because I rarely see the recent ones for sale while I see used MIA Ps and Js for sale all the time. I guess the ones that did buy them aren't very willing to let go of them.

MIA wouldn't matter to me... produce a MIM model priced low enough to actually sell and not just be some fancy limited edition collectors' item. Save that for the JagStang ;)

I would love if they brought back the entire family of guitars based on that body shape; Squier gets the Musicmaster, Bronco, and Duo-Sonic guitars/basses, and Fender makes the Mustangs. Slab bodies for Squier, and contours for Fender. I'd buy them all and die happy but poor!

You don't see used ones for sale because they never sold well so there aren't many to see. Of course you see more J's and P's, because they sell tons of those.

No - you're not wrong. It's a student, budget, entry level model.
Which is why it would make more sense for Squier to re-issue them, than it would for Fender.
It's also why I laugh when I see some of the ridiculous asking prices for the older ones.

Put a black pickguard on that one and it would match my Mustang guitar.
I saw one in a store not long after I bought my fretless--so I didn't have the cash--but it was tempting.

A new Mustang was my very first bass (67 or 68?). Hopefully the newer ones are much better. They must be, given the love and prices they seem to get these days. I've owned a LOT of basses since then, and the Mustang stands out as one of the 2 worst hunks of crap I've ever played. I still love P's though.......go figure.

Ha ha - I'll bet someone would pay a lot of money for that hunk of crap, if you still had it today.
