Double Bass phase question

I may go that way some day. For now the Realist does just fine for 95% of the things I do. I've been a pretty happy Realist guy for 10 years on two different basses. I'm also trying to make the things I already own do the trick.

It really does sound like a mic picking up the wood. With a bow it's very close to the sound of my bass. A good mic's better but the Realist has more volume before it feeds back and it warns you before that happens by producing a very different tone and timbre.

Not that it really matters 'cause it seems to be a bit of a game of dumb luck but the Realist/BassMax experiment was a glowing success. Even the soundman on one of the gigs commented that between the line from my AI (which has both pickups blended) and the mic it was easy to get a good sound. Our manager said the bass sounded great. Big and full with lots of wood.

Here a picture of how a hooked it up. I always disliked pickups that have the 1/4 jack stuck between the afterlength of the strings like the Bassmax or the Fishman. I removed that little clip thing and then fastened it to the output jack of the Realist.

Kind of a bunch to plug together but big festival stages have always been the bane of my DB existence. This setup definitely made things run much smoother.

I think weather it works or not IS very bass dependent, even bridge dependent.

A long time ago when the ol' BP-100's were popular, I used it on my carved German w/ eq and sometmes w/ pre-amps.
Worked fine on that bass. I later tried the Realist when it came out, but somehow that pu alone didn't get enough bite on especially the E string, but I loved the woodiness and the arco tone. I got a Raven Labs blender and started blending the two and was very pleased w/ the sound for years. No phase problems that I recall. Then I remember swapping out that bridge (w/ aluminum adjusters) for a Kolstein bridge (w/ wood adjusters) and there were tone problems galore. Probably phase issues. I went back to the old bridge.
These days that bass is almost a diff. instrument after Jeff Bolbach's magic w/ new FB, carbon fiber rod in neck, new tuners, and back to that same Kolstein bridge again tweaked by Jeff. Then I tried the same set up that Fingers has, Bass Maxx & Realist blended. Worked pretty well, but on Toad's suggestion I had Arnold put on a FC and that has been fine w/ less hassle. However, I find the arco tone of the Realist is superior, and on the Prescott that pu alone seems to work much better than the Bass Maxx or Rev Solo even at higher volumes. So much so that I rarely use a mic w/ that bass because I get just about everything I need w/o one. I think you just have to try these things on a specific bass before you really know if it's gonna work.
