Use a phaser for a few songs and have an early 2 knob Boss; sound is OK but bypass mode is not great and the there is high end loss and murkyness when on; overall tone is good just not very clear

Bought a super clean DoD on ebay but it arrived deffective (thumping sound when bypassed and bass loss when activated).

Had a MXR Phase 100 & a non- Nano Small Stone that were nice, but not right for me

Have considered Digitech and Ibanez; am thinking that I will prefer analog over digital for this application (pretty sure Digitech didn't make an analog pedal)

Realize that Maxon is an obvious choice but want to keep this to around $100 or less

Now that there is a new Pigtronix out, it looks like used units are in the $100ish range but no one in my area carries them to try, also think that they are AC adapter only units

Anybody have other suggestions or expereience with Pigtronix to get my phase thing happening?

Have also considered a Boss PH-2 which is the older 4 knob analog unit but have never used one

I liked the Ross Phaser since the Regen control allows to dial more psychodellic or subtle phase tones.
It works with OTAs (Operatonal Transconductance Amplifiers) just like the Small Stone, but the Regen is a great feature!

Man some people love suggesting pedals that go for twice your price range :p

It's true Chief but I appreciate all the advice you guys can share.

How about this version of the question:
Which used $100 or under pedal?
Am assuming that many would choose the Pigtronix over standard issue pedals like DoD, Boss PH-2, Ibanez, Nano, etc.
Sounds like after the above one would be headed to higher end botique pedals or mass proudeced like Maxon?

I love my AKAI Intelliphase, and you can find them for well under $100 on eBay, sometimes under $50. It even has a "Touch Phaser" section, but I use it with a synth that doesn't have touch sensitivity, so your results may vary on that part of it.

HBE Psilocybe is amazing, should have never sold that one. I slightly prefer the Earthquaker Grand Orbiter to it (better control, nearly equal in awesomesound), but I think both can be had for just a bit over your budget used. And really, an additional $20 for such an increase in kickassery is usually worth it. :smug:

The Psilocybe sounds cool, but I personally prefer less of a wet sound, and more of a woosh sound (Does that make sense?). When I can finally afford a phaser, I think I might just go all out and get the Keeley.
I don't know if you've gotten a chance to actually play with one, but most phasers have the potential of a variety of tones depending on how you've set them. "Wet" can be controlled through "regen" (in the case of the psilocybe) often also called "depth" and getting a good "woosh" is usually a matter of "speed."

I'm w/bigchiefbc here on the DOD- I just grabbed a clean FX20C & like it a lot. I used it last night in a 3-piece w/electric gtr drums & one singer; depth set low, speed fairly up & regen just above zero made everything a bit *bigger*- it's also capable of more Robin Trower/Pat Travers dizzying swirlage too. I'll try it through two amps(it's stereo_& add a mini-review later. Best part: $40. :hyper:

Unfotunately its no longer made. But the Maestro Stage phaser remains the best phaser for bass Ive ever played and owned. Is large pedal with light up wheels on either side for foot control of intensity and speed. If your lucky enough to come across a used one for sale, give it a try.
