I had been looking over the years not very seriously for an amp for upright and acoustic bass that can run off a battery for small jams, and I wasn't in the market to buy a Phil Jones Double Four today, but I did. I was actually reading threads about MAS cabs and ran across threads about the Double Four. So on a whim I looked up to see how much scratch these were going for. It is on sale at Proaudio Star for $349 w/ free shipping. Then I looked for a promo code and got 10% off with "10PERCENTOFF." So I bought one for the grand total of $314.

Then I bought on ebay a Lenmar PowerPort External Notebook and Laptop Battery Backup Charger w/ Adapters PPU916 for $48:

I love my double four. That's a great price you're getting. I have a couple posts about it up on the amps forum on the DB side. IME it needs a preamp such as the Fishman to sound it's best with the upright. It sounds beautiful with the ABG as well which I find to be a picky instrument when it comes to amplification. I use it occasionally on low volume gigs with drums and it does fine. It struggles sometimes in big open rooms or out doors unless I'm playing really quiet. Overall it's amazing what it can do at it's size.

OK...so since I have also bought an EDB-2 and a PJB BG-100. I like both the Double Four and the BG-100. I have not gigged yet with the Double Four but I have with the BG-100 doing a traditional blues duo with a guitar and me on upright. Plenty loud for the winery gig but I also went through DI through the PA (a board with two QSC K10s).

Based on playing at home with duo and trio guitars with me again on upright, I think the Double Four with the EDB-2 in front (with a K&K Bass max or Realist pup) will have a bit more oomph, and possibly more lower end, but I can't be definitive about the low end just yet. I've also used the Empress ParaEq with boost as a preamp and it does really work pretty well, but is slightly noisier than the Headway. The Headway is very quiet.

Looking forward to linking the two BG-100 and Double Four.

I've been concentrating on upright lately and a haven't run any of my bass guitars through the PJBs yet.

The Double Four runs great on the laptop battery but I haven't run it on battery enough to know how long it will go on the Lemar PowerPort...

I got a great deal on the BG-100, again from Pro Audio Star, for about $380 between a sale price and 10% off, but the one I got had a noise issue (sounded like a low volume short) and set it back to be replaced. I am waiting on the replacement.

I also have a PJB BG100 and love it for small jams and get together, when you get time I'd like to know how the BG100 stacks up against the Double Four tone and volume wise with a Bass guitar. 100_1204.JPG

I've had a PJD4 with battery for about 2 years and it's been great playing bass uke with my 60 strong uke group. I play it with all the basses in my signature twice a week for rehearsal in a rec-room, also for small indoor and very small outdoor gigs. But I found that it did not cut it for larger indoor or outdoor gigs. I have a Carvin MB15 plus 115MBE extension with a very powerful and compact lithium ion battery with inverter for those gigs.

Took your advice and bought a PJD4 from pro star using those nice discounts. Thanks for posting that!
I also got the Lenmar PPU916 power pack so that I can have a battery powered set up. Does anyone know how I can charge my Lenmar pack without having a compatible computer to plug it into? I've got a MacBook Pro and dont think I can charge it with that. Any advice is appreciated!

Hmm, this is all i got with my powerpack:

The cable at the bottom there only seems to plug into a compatible computer...but macs are not compatable. Mine didnt come with any kind of wall charger. I'll explore the usb idea. Thanks for your input kohanmike.

Thanks Whirledpeas. That seems to be working. I hesitated on doing that initially because the DF power supply puts out 20volts and I thought the power pack only could handle up to 19volts of input. I think it should be fine though...

Anyone have a line on the Lenmar battery? They don't seem to be available through Ebay anymore and the only ones I find are about $150 US. Has anyone found an alternative? I like the fact that it will slip in the handle. I've not yet received my amp so I guess I'll look into some alternatives when I have exact dimensions, perhaps there is something slim that can be velcroed to the amp.
