I’ve been getting text messages from ATT saying…
“your December bill is paid, here’s a gift for you.”
Followed by a short clickable link.
I’ve been getting them for the last few months.
they are not from ATT.
For a while I was getting regular emails from all kinds of banks warning me a card or account breach had resulted in my account/card being locked, with links to follow to unlock my account/card. I never followed any of the links because I never had accounts or cards with any of them.

i'm getting fake paypal crap daily for months now, i've been locked out of my account twice today alone

My fave were the calls telling me my Microsoft license was about to expire and i would be charged $375. I could get $350 off by going to a website they would give me a URL for. I’d play along and tell them nothing was happening when i tried to go to the site. We’d go round and round with them telling me what to enter and me always messing it up, when I was not actually entering anything. Eventually they would give in and hang up.
I've been getting notifications similar to 4Mal's original post, but mine are "from" Norton advising me of my latest "automatic payment" for virus protection "for my P.C.". Nice trick, since I have an iMac...
PayPal always uses your name in the salutation. Always. Never "User" or email address.
I'd been getting a bunch of those AT&T ones. Following AT&T's advice, I started forwarding them to their special number to help them combat the problem. They disappeared for a while but lately I've been getting those almost daily again. Whoever is sending these things evidently have found a way around AT&T security.

Keto diet stuff
Erectile Dysfunction fixes
Horny girls from (insert any country here)
etc, etc.
Most are fairly easy to discern but some make you look a little closer. Like the the ones telling me my student loans are in default and I'll be turned into the IRS or some nonsense like that. Until I remembered I'm 60 yrs old and never had any student loans.

I think I read here that the broken English is somewhat deliberate to weed out the sharper folks. They want the ones who don't notice the little details and will be easier to fleece. Sounds logical.
